Odysseus got a 93 Beyer for his Tampa Bay Derby win - so Schoolyard Dreams gets the same figure as well. Figure Super Saver gets a 92 for being a 1/2 length behind. Randy Moss wrote on his DRF blog that this race had a good pace early - also lot of talk about the big move Schoolyard Dreams made wide into the pace. If he can sustain that run, he could be formidable. The question is, why didn't he sustain the run? Was he short, short on pedigree, or maybe that's the limit of his run?
In what was the biggest weekend of the year for Derby preps, we saw a wide variety of top-class performances, such as Lookin At lucky turning near-disaster into a gutsy, thrilling victory in the Rebel Stakes (gr. III); Odysseus’ return from the dead to snatch victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III)...Read More

  • musket man · How can you say its hard to see them coming back to do much? Street Sense won in 2007, Musket Man won it last year and General Quarters also ran. The Tampa Bay Derby is becoming a top derby prep and should receive Grade II status next year. If it doesn't then the whole grading system is a joke. • musket man · arazi- don't forget that even though the track was labeled "fast" it got hammered with 2 inches of rain the day before. The turf was still yielding for the Hillsborough and the Turf Dash. Besides, give props to the Tampa Bay Downs staff for NOT packing the track so tight like their neighbors up at Gulfstream do for their big race.... · 696 days ago ·
