Write this down and remember it sure as sunshine. Canford Cliffs will absolutely pound Rip Van Winkle in this year's running the Sussex Stakes. Canford Cliffs has just an explosive turn of foot. Trainer Richard Hannon says Canford Cliffs is the best horse he's ever trained. That's a big statement considering he also has his other 3yr.old sensation, Dick Turpin, and also Paco Boy in his barn. I believe Canford Cliffs cruising speed will just take too much out of Rip Van Winkle for him to have any meaningful kick left at the end of the race. In the 2009 Sussex Stakes, Rip Van Winkle had the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and Coral-Eclipse Stakes run's under his belt. So he was fit and ready for Goodwood last season. But this season, a 7 month lay-off from early November's Breeders Cup Classic until early June's Queen Anne Stakes. A race where Rip was basically thrown under the bus. Being put in that race against Goldikova and Paco Boy for a 2010 debut. Now, another 1-1/2 lay-off with still only the one race under his belt. That's one race in almost 9 months. Rip Van Winkle will just not be fit or sharp enough to beat a colt that's just dominating the 3yr.old mile division the way Canford Cliffs has been doing. Finishing 2nd in the Greenham Stakes, 3rd in the English 2000 Guineas, won the Irish 2000 Guineas, and then won the St James's Palace Stakes. Just an incredible colt.
