What the Nation is saying about the 2010 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1)...

Gio Ponti has been caught nearing the wire three times during a tough-luck campaign in 2010. The dual champion finally had enough of that, this time doing a little catching of his own. Cutting back to one mile for the first time all year, Gio Ponti niftily split horses in deep stretch under Ramon Do...Read More

  • mdracing69 · Gio Ponti ran a nice race but was not the most impressive turf mile winner at Keeneland on Saturday. Proviso ran a bit faster and finished strong in her G1 First Lady triumph. She beat Grade 1 males at Santa Anita earlier this year. As for Gio Ponti, I agree that ten furlongs is his best distance and I would try the BC Classic. All it takes is a bad draw and his Mile hopes would be dashed. · 1369 days ago ·

  • cugel the clever · Tough spot for this horse, but I think he has a better shot at the BC Mile. Turf is his best surface and he's probably the #3 ranked tuf miler right now, behind Goldikova and Proviso. So, with racing luck, he stands a chance in the BC Mile. But, for the BC Classic, he's definately an outsider. He couldn't beat Z last year in the Classic on polytrack; so what chance does he have on dirt against Z and a much stronger field of males than last year's Classic. All of Z, QR, Blame, LAL, and Haynesfield ave better shots in the Classic that Gio Ponti. · 1369 days ago ·

Time to bring on the milers! The First Lady kicks off the three grade one miles we will be treated to on Saturday, and I've got to say this is a dynamite field. Trying to pick a winner was not easy at all, and who can expect it to be when you have Proviso and Wasted Tears facing off!Wasted Tears is ...Read More

  • medlocke · Gio Ponti is kind of in a tough spot in this year's Breeders Cup races. Turf is definitely his best surface. But unfortunately for Gio Ponti, 10 furlongs has always been his best distance. The Breeders Cup event doesn't have a 10 furlong turf race for him to go to. He's always been vulnerable to defeat at 12 furlongs. With the likes of Workforce and Fame and Glory possibly headed to America from Europe for the Breeders Cup Turf. That race would difficult at best for Gio Ponti to try to win. He's won over a mile in his career on turf. In the Frank E. Kilroe Mile. But there again, he's never raced at a mile on turf against the kind of speed that will likely be coming from Europe for the Breeders Cup Mile-Turf. I think Gio Ponti may potentially be one of those rare horses that has the ability to race over turf, synthetics, and conventional dirt. I think he's at his best on turf. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Gio Ponti pop up and run well on conventional dirt. The same way he ran well on synthetics in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic. I don't think he can beat the Euro horses at 12 furlongs on turf, or the Euro horses at a mile on turf. If I was Gio Ponti's connections. I'd take my chances that he'll respond to conventional dirt. Knowing that 10 furlongs is his best trip. And hope for a big run out of him in the Breeders Cup Classic again. If not the Classic, then let him try the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. The competition level of the Dirt Mile will be much easier than the competition level of the turf mile. JMO. · 1371 days ago ·

  • medlocke · I meant to say Gio Ponti would have a shot at beating Goldikova, Paco Boy, or Makfi if the B.C. Mile-Turf were a 9 or 10 furlong race and not just a mile. My comments didn't come out correctly in my above statement. · 1392 days ago ·

  • mshutty · Good points, Medlocke. The Euro's sent their C team to the Arlington Million and took two of the three top spots. Imagine what Gio will be up against in the BC Mile. As for Sidney's Candy, there are likely to be quality speed challengers and that CD turf course will be long and deep come BC time.
