Fair Grounds racing secretary Jason Boulet reminds horsemen that “Early Bird” nominations to the 98th running of the Grade II Louisiana Derby – to be contested for a purse of $1 million for the first time this year – close Monday, Dec. 13.   Early bird nominations to the annual centerpiece of t...Read More
The first of three televised “Road to the Kentucky Derby” programs garnered modest ratings March 27 when USA Network reported that 420,000 viewers tuned in to coverage of the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) from Fair Grounds and Lane’s End Stakes (gr. II) from Turfway Park from 5-6 p.m. ET.Read More
Drosselmeyer, who ran a solid third in the Louisiana Derby, but is still short on graded stakes earnings, could get one more shot to get into the Derby in either the Blue Grass or the Lexington. Read More
  • arazi · I could be wrong on this one, but I'd still love to see Drosselmeyer get a decent pace to run and and a clean run to show what he can do. It's true the same could also be said of Stay Put and Ron the Greek. I believe time will show that these three are the most talented of the Risen Star / Louisiana Derby runners... not Discreetly Mine, Tempted to Tapit, Northern Giant, Mission Impazible or A Little Warm (routing). · 789 days ago ·

  • cigar · I think the only horse I want out of here is the winner. A Little Warm, while nice, rode a track favoring his style. Drossel has had too many chances and is now officially overrated. The rest? It would be a stretch. · 792 days ago ·

  • bband · Let this serve as a WARNING to all those considering closers in the Louisiana Derby. On Friday, there were four dirt sprints. All FOUR were won wire to wire. There were only two routes, but both were won by horses who tracked closely in third on the rail, and the FG Oaks was nearly won by a total longshot speedball in Champagne d'Oro, who was only run down by a 1/2 length by Quiet Temper. Be sure to watch the track today and see how it is playing. · 793 days ago ·

Two days, four Fair Grounds stakes wins for trainer Todd Pletcher. What's more, he just swept all three of the FG G2s of the meet, taking the NO 'Cap, the Muniz, and the La. Derby consecutively. Wow. Not favored Discreetly Mine but Mission Impazible who came through for Pletcher. Mission Impazible.....Read More
Everyone is talking about the Louisiana Derby having more speed just because the Risen Star had none. But the FG track is playing very, very good to speed Friday and through the first three dirt races on the card Saturday, although all were sprints. I think a big concern here is that Pletcher has both Discreetly Mine and Mission Impazible. Discreetly Mine is already in the Derby, and he doesn't need another front runner to go with Rule and Super Saver. So, why not teach Discreetly Mine to rate and let Mission Impazible go and run a big one. Would not be surprised at all to see him in front of a moderate pace. Then it depends on how much Wow Wow can wing it from the outside or maybe Backtrack, who is no cinch to show speed.
  • bband · Well... Wow Wow Wow never got out, the pace was moderate, and Mission Impazible didn't even need to go to the lead.... but the rest was pretty accurate. Now watch Pletcher send Mission Impazible and Discreetly Mine to the Derby with no chance at all, only to make it look like there is a bunch of speed and then send Rule to the front! · 793 days ago ·
