What the Nation is saying about the 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1)...

Michael Dickinson’s interest in racing surfaces first took root in the mid-1970s when he spent two summers at Ballydoyle in Ireland, working with his mentor, the late Vincent O’Brien, the legendary Irish trainer. “He started the all-weather gallops,” Dickinson said of O’Brien. “Before that, everyone...Read More
I don't really understand the odds maker at Meydan in Dubai very well. Take horses like Gloria De Campeao and Allybar for example. Gloria De Campeao had a bad finish on turf in the 09' Arlington Million. But went back to dirt and synthetics, went to Singapore and beat Presvis for the 3 million dollar Singapore International Cup. Then goes to Dubai, win's the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 1, get's clipped right at the wire by Japanese filly Red Desire, but finishes a strong 2nd in the Al Maktoum Rd. 3. Allybar comes to Dubai from racing well in France. Beats Presvis in the Al Tayer Motors Handicap. Win's the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2 impressively, and grabs 3rd in the Al Maktoum Rd. 3. They send these two horses off at 16-1 for the 2010 Dubai World Cup. But they take a colt like Crowded House for example. Came to Dubai, and had two good place efforts behind Alexandros and Allybar. But hasn't had a Stakes victory since winning the Racing Post Trophy as a 2yr.old in 2008. They send him off at 12-1. I'd love to have their odds maker come to the U.S. and set morning line odds. When you can get 6-1 on Gio Ponti and Vision D'Etat. Two of the best turf horses in the world. JMO.
There is always plenty to talk about after the Dubai World Cup. This year, with the multi-billion-dollar Meydan Racecourse making its prime-time debut, there’s even more to talk about than usual.Unlike the misnamed Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Dubai World Cup program truly is a "world" eve...Read More
Gloria De Campeao ran a terrific Carnival at Meydan. It's hard to believe that he was sent off at 16-1, considering he's raced in International Stakes all over the world in 2009, and has only been off the board once, on turf, in the 09' Arlington Million. He came into the race having beaten Presvis in May in the 3 million dollar Singapore Airlines International Cup, then had a 7th in the Arlington Million. Went to Meydan and won the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.1, just nailed at the wire by Japanese filly Red Desire in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.3, and then win's the Dubai World Cup. Allybar also had an amazing Carnival as well. Beating Presvis in the Al Tayer Motors Handicap, and beating Crowded House in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.2, then finished 3rd in the World Cup, in that 3-way photo with GDC, Lizard's Desire, and Allybar. The worst ride has to go to Fallon on Gitano Hernando. Allybar drew the rail, G.H. was in stall 2. But Fallon never tried to get him off of the rail. Granted, it was crowded, but there was a few times in the race that Fallon could've split Allybar and Mastery to get off of the rail. Gitano Hernando looked full of run, but by the time Fallon put him into the clear, it was far too late for him. Gio Ponti ran well to get up for 4th going very wide. Mastery also made an excellent accounting of himself, just nosed out by Gio Ponti, and getting 5th. The two big disappointments of the race, IMO, were Twice Over and Vision D'Etat. Both were never a factor in the race at anytime.
On Saturday, the world’s richest horse race was run on an all-weather track. Meydan’s $10 million Dubai World Cup was won by Gloria de Campeao on Tapeta. Gloria de Campeao is a Brazilian-bred son of an Argentine sire. The 7-year-old horse is owned by a Swede and trained by a Frenchman in England...Read More
Obviously, Gloria De Campeao, after finishing 2nd in 2009 to Well Armed in the Dubai World Cup, and then coming back to Dubai, after winning the 3 million dollar Singapore International Cup, to race at Meydan and win the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.1, finishing 2nd in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3, nailed at the wire by Japanese filly Red Desire, and then beating the world's best in the 2010 Dubai World Cup would certainly take top honors for the 2010 Dubai Racing Carnival. But a horse that I became very impressed by after watching him perform at Meydan was Allybar. Beating Presvis and Zulu Chief in the Al Tayer Motors Handicap, winning the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.2, finishing a very strong 4th in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd.3, and then just missing by a whisker winning the 2010 Dubai World Cup, splitting Gloria De Campeao and Lizard's Desire in the photo for win. Allybar ultimately grabbed 3rd, but was there at the line with both Gloria De Campeao and Lizard's Desire. Racing mostly in France in late 08' and early 09', Allybar did win a couple of races in France, but really burst onto the world racing scene during the 3 month Dubai Racing Carnival at Meydan. I look forward to seeing this colt race further in the future.

In perusing the past performances for the 100 horses that were to run on this year's Dubai World Cup card, it struck me that most of these critters had earned enough. THE first Dubai World Cup at billion-dollar Meydan ended in a dramatic finish as last year's runner-up Gloria De Campeao (Pascal Bary/TJ Pereira) just held on in the tightest of three-way photos. • medlocke · The photo between Gloria De Campeao and Lizard's Desire is so close, even after seeing it several times, I really don't know how they didn't come to the conclusion that the 2010 Dubai World Cup was a dead heat. Allybar was also right there in between GDP and LD, just missing by a whisker himself. Gio Ponti got up for fourth, but had to go very wide to do so. Just nosing out Mastery at the line in a very close finish for 4th and 5th. Gitano Hernando got boxed in on the rail and had a terrible trip. He looked full of run, but never really got to unwind it. By the time GH did get into the clear, it was far too late. The two biggest disappointments of the race, to me, were Twice Over and Vision D'Etat. Vision D'Etat, one of the best international stakes horses in the world, clearly did not adapt to the Tapeta synthetic surface and finished far back. It was VD first lifetime start off of the turf. · 1154 days ago ·

There was plenty of praise and exaultation for the champion, Gloria De Campeao, the Brazilian-bred son of Argentine-sire Impression, a winner by the slimmest of discernable margins in the $10 million Dubai World Cup (G1).  The winner of the Maktoum Challenge - R1 (G3), and a tough second parall...Read More

It is possible that one of the main European favorites for the Dubai World Cup, Vision D’Etat, could miss the Dubai World Cup as he may be lame.  Rumors spread early afternoon in Dubai and it seems a complete re-work of the Hong Kong Cup (G1) for trainer Eric Libaud, who encountered the same ex...Read More
The Dubai World Cup will go the way of Japan when RED DESIRE scores a knockout punch.  Maybe. • Medlocke · Gio Ponti did get a real good Post Position draw for the 2010 Dubai World Cup. Drawing P.P. #4 out of 14. The last time I checked on attheraces.com a few hours ago, Vision D'Etat from P.P. #6 was the 4-1 favorite. Twice Over drew P.P.#11, and had initially been the favorite until he drew wide. Twice Over was second choice at 11-2. Gio Ponti and Gitano Hernando from P.P. #2 are both 6-1, all on the parimutuel. Mastery had been 6-1, but drew wide also getting P.P #12. He's now at 8-1 with Gloria De Campeao from P.P.#5. · 1156 days ago ·
