What the Nation is saying about the 2010 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1)...

Rags to Riches beats Curlin in the Test of Champions. Zarkava wins the Arc. Rachel Alexandra wins the Preakness, Haskell, and Woodward. Vodka wins the Japan Cup. Zenyatta comes within inches of two consecutive Breeders' Cup Classics. Goldikova takes home three straight BC Miles. The list of fantasti...Read More

The Breeders’ Cup has had a difficult time getting people to think of its Friday program as Ladies Day. Midday's gonna be tough to beat in the B.C. F&M Turf. She's racing really well right now. Having run off 3 straight G1 win's in the Blue Square Nassau Stakes, the Yorkshire Oaks, and the Prix Vermeille. But in all three races, Midday's talent was certainly put to the test. Most especially at Goodwood in the Nassau Stakes. Where Midday was the first to commit, and go for home. She found herself 3 lengths clear of the field, and began to paddle. With no beside her to run against. Nearly letting the brilliant French filly, Stacelita, steal the race from her. She also had a pretty stiff challenge from Plumania as well. At Longchamp, in the Prix Vermeille. Again, Midday held on to win. But Plumania finished to within a half-length of her that day. I no longer see Stacelita's name on the list of potential starters for the F&M Turf? So I'm assuming connections have decided not to send Stacelita to America. I think she would've been a difficult beat for Midday, given a re-match with her. I'd also expect Plumania to run well against Midday again as well. But the one wild card filly in the race that Midday has yet to face in her career is the Japanese filly, Red Desire. Red Desire is one of the most talented fillies in the world, IMO. Her losses in Japan have come almost exclusively to the horse that I think is the best turf horse in Japan, in Buena Vista. Male or female. If Buena Vista were running in the F&M Turf? I'd bet her to beat Midday. Red Desire has finished 2nd to Buena Vista in very close finishes in both the 2009 Japanese 1000 Guineas and the Japanese Oaks. Red Desire did get a win over Buena Vista in the 2009 G1 Shuka Sho in Japan. She also defeated a field of some of the best colt's in the world at Meydan during the 2010 Dubai Racing Carnival. Winning the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 on the Tapeta surface at Meydan. That race is considered the biggest prep for the Dubai World Cup. Red Desire showed a tremendous turn of foot, with a from last to first dash in the stretch. In the process defeating Gloria De Campeao, Lizard's Desire, and Allybar. The top 3 finishers in this year's Dubai World Cup. Red Desire also defeated the Dubai Duty Free winner, Al Shemali in that race. The Japanese super-mare, Vodka. Godolphin's Cavalryman. Winner of the 09' Grand Prix De Paris and Prix Niel. As well as South Africa's Mr. Brock. Who always run's well in Dubai, and had 2 carnival win's prior to being beaten by Red Desire. I think she'll be the one filly that really test Midday in this year's F&M Turf. If Midday is not at the very top of her game at Churchill Downs that day? Red Desire, IMO, is more than capable of picking up the pieces and springing an upset. TJMO.

This is one of the 2010 Breeders Cup races that I'm really excited to see. 2009 B.C. F&M Turf champion, Midday, is racing as well as any filly or mare in Europe at present. Having now reeled off three straight G1 win's. Defeating the French filly, Stacelita, in a close affair. In the G1 Blue Square Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. Then going to York, and defeating 2010 Epsom and Irish Oaks winner, Snow Fairy, in the Yorkshire Oaks. Then a trip to France. Where Midday defeated another top French filly in Plumania. In the G1 Prix Vermille. Plumania had just recently beaten 09' Hong Kong Vase winner, Daryakana, and Arc De Triomphe 2nd place finisher, Youmzain in the Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud. But Midday is going to have some stiff competition. Another likely rematch with Stacelita. Who, since finishing 2nd to Midday at Goodwood has gone on to win the G1 Prix Jean-Romanet at Deauville. Stacelita's lifetime record is 11-8-1-0. Very impressive. Red Desire is another that will make a tough race for Midday. I think the best horse in Japan is the filly Buena Vista. Red Desire ran close 2nd place finishes to Buena Vista in both the Japanese 1000 Guineas and Japanese Oaks. She also went to Dubai, and won the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 at Meydan. Defeating the top three finishers of the 2010 Dubai World Cup in that race. Eastern Aria is another European mare that's racing well right now. The Al Maktoum owned mare just won the G2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster, and also took the G3 Hennessy Fillies Stakes at Goodwood. Former B.C. F&M Turf champion, Forever Together always run's a big race in the F&M Turf. The American mare won this race in 2008, and was 3rd behind Midday and Pure Clan in 2009. I expect Forever Together to make another big run again in 2010. The F&M Turf really is going to feature some very high quality fillies and mares in 2010.
Red Desire, the one horse to defeat Gloria De Campeao in the Maktoum Challenge (G2) before he went on to win the 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1), has arrived in America in preparation for two races this autumn.  Trained by Mikio Matsunaga, Red Desire is expected to contest the Flower Bowl Invitationa...Read More
