HRH Princess Haya of Jordan’s Debussy – a 4-year-old Irish-bred son of Diesis –  scored an unexpected victory with a crescendo of a late run in Arlington Million XXVIII Saturday.    Just moments earlier Castleton Lyons’ Gio Ponti appeared to have designed a second straight tally in t...Read More

  • mshutty · Interesting quotes from the race--William Buick (Debussy)-- "We were very tight for room. I thought 'Oh no, I'm not going to have room' but we finally got clear and he was able to run his race" Buick is Norwegian born and rides first call for John Gosden He also won the Dubai Sheema Classic aboard Dar Re Me. John Gosden--"I've been trying to win this race for 28 years" Ramon Dominguez (Gio Ponti)--"I thought I had enough to hang on. Once I got clear, the horse was idling a bit-maybe looking at the stands or something. The trip was great. I had a lot of horse turning for home." · 1030 days ago ·

Castleton Lyons’ Gio Ponti, who captured last summer’s Grade I Arlington Million as the fans’ favorite, looms as an even stronger 7-5 choice in the morning line as he faces nine rivals in Saturday’s 28th running of the centerpiece race of the Chicago Thoroughbred racing season – run at a mile and a ...Read More
  • medlocke · The three European turf horses that will run against Gio Ponti in the Arlington Million, I have seen all three of them in their races in 2010. Debussy, if Gio Ponti is not on his "A" game, could be a real threat. He's really a bit better horse than even his numbers suggest. Debussy won the G3 Huxley Stakes at Chester back in May. Beating a very good field of rivals, and looking pretty impressive in the race. He most recently just finished 4th in the Sky Bet York Stakes won by Summit Surge. Who is also in today's field. Tazeez is also another Euro horse that could be dangerous to Gio Ponti. He seems to be improving every race. Finishing 3rd behind Byword and Twice Over in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal-Ascot back in June. And most recently having again finished 3rd at Newmarket in the Princess of Wales Stakes. Beaten by Sans Frontiers and Redwood. But Tazeez has every chance to win the Princess of Wales, and also finished ahead of Spanish Moon, who was a heavy favorite to win the race. But if Gio Ponti runs to the form he capable of running? He should become a back to back winner of the Arlington Million, IMO. · 1032 days ago ·

Looks like the Million is wide open this year. I don't think Gio Ponti necessarily has to win.

Famous Name is also listed as a potential starter for the Celebration Mile at Goodwood on August 28th. I doubt it's very likely that Prince Khalid Abdullah would send Famous Name to America to run in the Arlington Million on August 21st. Then bring him back to Europe to race in the totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood one week later. Given that Famous Name has never raced outside of Europe, and has been primarily racing in Ireland at Leopardstown in 2010. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high about Famous Name coming to America. Although I'd love it if he did. This colt has raced 18 times in his career and finished in the money in 17 of them. He has a lifetime record of 18-9-6-2 and his won his last four races in a row.
Could Shadwell Stable’s Tajaaweed be the “chosen one” to pose in the winner’s circle following the 28th running of the Grade I Arlington Million on Aug. 21?  After the way the 5-year-old son of Dynaformer closed to finish third in the Grade III Arlington Handicap July 17, beaten only a length ...Read More
