Saturday's $10 million Dubai World Cup field had a slight shake-up over the weekend when Take the Points, who won the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park and Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park last summer and fall, was redirected to the $5 million Dubai Duty Free over about 1 1-8 miles on turf...Read More

With Cavalryman out of the Dubai World Cup, and going back to the Turf for the Sheema Classic, I'd have to say, just knowing his ability in "big money" Stakes races around the world that Vision D'Etat will likely be the World Cup favorite. Although, I've never seen him race over the Tapeta but only on Turf in his career. But there's a number of other horses that will be very game competitors in the race, IMO. Gio Ponti and Twice Over, although normally Turf horses, have proven themselves capable of performing on the synthetic track in the 09' Breeders Cup Classic. Also, Mastery has raced and performed well on synthetics at Kempton in the 09' Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes. Gloria De Campeao has proven to just like Dubai period. No matter which surface he races over, Tapeta or Turf. But the one horse in the field that sticks out to me, that because of all these great Turf horses in the race, that a person may get a price, and he loves the synthetic track is Gitano Hernando. Winning in both the UK and the U.S. over the synthetic tracks. He wouldn't be a bad ATB bet given he'll likely go off about 8 or 10-1. JMO.
It looks as though a full field of 14 runners will contest the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I)--the world's richest horse race--March 27 at Meydan Racecourse.Though entries will not be drawn until next week, the maximum number of starters is expected for the 10-furlong race over the Tapeta surfa...Read More
  • Rossington · I've never seen Vision D'Etat race over any surface except turf in his racing career, so I really don't know what to expect out of him over the Tapeta surface at Meydan. I will say this, that other than a poor finish in the 09' Prix d' le Arc', he's been one of the most "clutch" racing for big money Group or Grade 1 horses in the world in 2009. With victories in the Prix Ganay, The Prince of Wales Stakes, and the Pacific Hong Kong Cup, beating a star-studded field that yielded Presvis, Collection, Ashalanda, and Eagle Mountain but to name a few. He also has one 2nd place finish to Spanish Moon in the 09' Prix Foy, and one 3rd place finish to Trincot and The Bogberry in the 09' Prix harcourt. If Vision D'Etat adapts and run's well over the Tapeta surface, Gio Ponti and Twice over, already proven stayers on synthetics, may be his only real challenges. But if he struggles on the surface, as did Prix Neil and Arc 3rd place finisher Cavalryman, than the race may become a wide open one. JMO. · 695 days ago ·

  • Medlocke · Really ironic. That's how the "Sport of King's" plays out sometimes. After John Shirreffs saddle's both the 2009 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic champion in Life is Sweet, and the Breeders Cup Classic champion in Zenyatta, everyone is lead to believe that Zenyatta will be retired, and Life is Sweet will, at that point, become the #1 filly/mare, if not horse period, in John Shirreffs racing stable. Now, on the day that Zenyatta is set to return to the track, Life is Sweet is set for retirement. IMO, Life is Sweet was a very high quality filly that was more than capable of holding her own, and showed that, against Zenyatta, and the best of the best fillies in racing by winning the 2009 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic. Also, ran a great 3rd against the colt's in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup. It really is another, not only quality filly, but quality horse lost to the track. Your racing ability will be sorely missed. All the best to Life is Sweet in retirement. May her breeding successes go on to equal her racing successes. · 698 days ago ·

I really like Cavalryman as a competitor. But watching his run at Meydan on March 4th leads me to believe that he may be better served sticking with the turf. Until we see him race over the Tapeta surface at Meydan also, the same may be true for Vision D'Etat, who's racing successes have all came on turf. If the Gio Ponti that raced well on synthetics at Santa Anita shows up on the Tapeta in Dubai, he may be a difficult beat. But right now, and I'd say you would get him at a little bit of a price, Gitano Hernando is tearing up the synthetic and all-weather surface track racing everywhere he's been of late. Going Gitano Hernando across the board in the Dubai World Cup might be the safest bet to make. IMO.

On 3-4-10 at Meydan Racecourse over in Dubai, Cavalryman, in his Dubai World Cup prep was a well beaten 6th as the race favorite in the Al Maktoum over the Tapeta surface. Beaten by the Japanese filly Red Desire, Gloria De Campio, Allybar, Lizzards Desire, and Mr. Brock. He finished just ahead of the great Japanese race-mare Vodka. Cavalryman looked nothing on synthetics like the colt that won the 09'Grand Prix De Paris, the 09' Prix Niel, and ran a very game 3rd in the 09' Prix de l' Arc de Triomphe beaten only by Sea The Stars and Youmzain, all of those races on turf. He just didn't seem to have the 'turn of foot" on the Tapeta surface that he's always displayed on turf. IMO.
The earlier statement that I made about Vision D'Etat is still correct. But it was made before I found out that Cavalryman was going to entered in the Dubai World Cup. IMO, other than Sea The Stars, Cavalryman was likely the 2nd best 3yr.old colt in the world in 2009. He finished 7th in the World Thoroughbred Rankings, behind STS, Rip Van Winkle, and Fame and Glory for 3yr.old colts. But IMO, he ran as good of a campaign with more success than Rip Van Winkle or Fame and Glory. In May Cavalryman raced and was just narrowly beaten by his stablemate Cutlass Bay in the Prix Greffulhe. Then in July, he won the 09' Grand Prix De Paris beating Age of Aquarius and Mastery. In September he won the Prix Niel beating Beheshtam and Claremont. Then in October it was off to Longchamp and the 09' Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, where Cavalryman ran a terrific race and was just clipped for 2nd in a photo behind Sea The Stars and Youmzain. This horse has a ton of talent, and has the potential to win any race that he's entered in. IMO.

  • Rossington · Because there's likely to be just too many "big guns" in the 2010 Dubai World Cup, I'd say Life is Sweet has a very slim chance of winning the race. But, It would not at all surprise me, especially given the track surface, to see her hit the board in the race. Most of the racing experts gave her little chance to hit the board in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup against the colts, but she managed a from last to third dash to hit the board in that race. Granted, the Dubai World Cup is likely to be a much tougher field than was the Hollywood Gold Cup. But Life is Sweet has also improved her racing skills a great deal since her run in the Hollywood Gold Cup. If Vision D'Etat races in the Dubai World Cup instead of the Dubai Duty Free, as he's listed as a potential starter for both races, I'd give him an ever so slight edge to win the Cup over Gio Ponti. With Life is Sweet possibly getting up for a show if she gives a top notch effort. Vision D'Etat rarely loses big Grade or Group 1 races anywhere he goes in the world. And if he doesn't win, he's almost never off of the board. But with a run like he had in the Breeders Cup Classic, and a run like she had in the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic, I could see Gio Ponti and Life is Sweet being strong competition for Vision D'Etat. With the retirement of Sea The Stars, IMO, Vision D'Etat having won the Prix Du Jockey Club and the Prix Niel in late summer and early fall of 2008, and then won the Prix Ganay, Prince of Wales Stakes, the Hong Kong Cup, and ran a very close 2nd to Spanish Moon in the Prix Foy in 2009, may be the best, the toughest beat, and most "clutch" international colt racing anywhere in the world right now in major Grade or Group 1 races. His only poor showing of 2009 was the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, where he finished 10th in a race that boasted quite a "star studded" field. Sea The Stars, Youmzain, Cavalryman, Conduit, DarReMi, Stacelitta, and Fame and Glory but to name just a few of the runners in that race. If Vision D'Etat does indeed show up to race in the Dubai World Cup, he'd be my first choice by a slim margin over Gio Ponti to win the race. JMO.
Long pointed for the Dubai World Cup (G1), Gitano Hernando did not disappoint as the 1-2 favorite stormed home a convincing 4.5 length winner of the Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield.  Jockey Kieren Fallon got into the colt with about three furlongs to run and bending for home, the Goodwood (G1) ...Read More
