What the Nation is saying about the 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1)...

It's a time when three-year-olds need to step up against older, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup is a great place... Read More

  • likin sparks · I know where Mike is coming from, with this years race is kinda weak where half the competion has had a difficult time placing in the money so I wouldn't think the WOW factor will be there. As much as I haven't been sold on Stay Thirsty for him not to win by 7 or 10 lenghts would be a kick in the can. · 135 days ago ·

  • brooklyn.steve · Stay Thirsty should win the JCGC, which should make him the co fav for Horse of the Year with HDG. He has come along nicely, and while Flat Out will be a tough challenge, Mike Repole will be standing in the winners circle at the end of the day. · 135 days ago ·

I'm really curious. I know that a few of the "bigger name" horses that ran in the 2009 Kentucky Derby have now been retired. I.E., Pioneer of The Nile, Dunkirk, and Papa Clem. But I'm wondering what the status of some of the Derby contenders or horses that were injured and didn't race again after the Derby is? Musket Man, 3rd in both 09' Derby and Preakness. I Want Revenge, scratched the morning of the Derby. The Pamplemousse, scratched the morning of the 09' Santa Anita Derby. What is the racing status now on these horses? I know Desert Party just returned to the track with a win at Meydan in Dubai on 3-4-10 in the Mahab Al Shemaal. Friesan Fire and General Quarters recently got back in the game running 1-2 in the Louisiana Handicap at Louisiana Downs. But what of these other 09' Derby racers and contenders? Are we to ever see them perform back on the track again? I'd truly love to know the answer to that question.

I guess those who said he was a fluke are eating their words! MTB isnt a fluke, he hasnt been off the board since winning the Derby. Give credit where credit is due. He is a very nice horse and you are all mad you went against the Birdstones. How could anyone bet against a Birdstone? Duh, class horse all the way.
"One of the things that we need to be worried about is that one of the states that have racinos looks at the first Saturday in May (the traditional Derby day) and creates a race with a $5 million purse," he said. "What will that do to the Kentucky Derby?" The Derby's purse is $2 million.Read More
  • horses · In other news, "The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!" Seriously, you should read this. There is no length these people will go to in order to justify slots. I'm not saying slots wouldn't be good... but to say the Derby will go away is just folly... · 958 days ago ·

The garland had been stored in refrigeration overnight in the museum, and at noon (EDT) was briefly placed over the rail of the Barbaro sculpture in tribute to the ill-fated 2006 winner of the Kentucky Derby.  The garland was then removed and Woolley and Allen began handing out the roses, one-b...Read More
  • sandy · The distribution of roses from Mine That Bird's blanket at the Barbaro statue was the classiest gesture I've seen in a long time. We've had two Kentucky Derbies since Barbaro's passing and it took a New Mexico cowboy with a small, discounted horse to come up with such a lovely tribute. I hope they win the Belmont. They definitely have the class. · 996 days ago ·

The all-day infield party at the Preakness Stakes may have been a dud on Saturday because of a new ban on bring-your-own beer, but it turns out that Churchill Downs doesn't allow spectators to carry in booze either. Sensible suggestions for revision of the Kentucky Derby qualifying process take a beating when there is a nonsensical winner such as Mine That Bird. It was a tough choice, but Calvin Borel will ride Rachel Alexandra in next weekend's Preakness Stakes, provided the filly continues to train well up to the race. Said Jess Jackson, "They were an amazing team at the Kentucky Oaks... We think this is a perfect match of rider and horse."Read More
