What the Nation is saying about the 2009 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1)...

careless Jewel went straight to the front as expected, but she failed to settle and ran off under Landry. She stopped on a dime, and her early antics set things up Zenyatta's stablemate Life Is Sweet, who swept to an easy score. Mushka rallied for the place, and Music Note filled out the tri for the 2nd straight year. Life Is Sweet (1st) - $18.20, $8, $5 Mushka (2nd) - $12.80, $6.40 Music Note (3rd) - $3.20 Proviso (4th) $1 Exacta - $85.80 $1 Trifecta - $523.60 .10 cent Superfecta - $253.34
Careless Jewel went super fast early in the Ladies' Classic and it set the stage for Life Is Sweet who moved outside into the stretch and ran down the pacemakers en route to a sharp win. Mushka ran second while Music Note came on for third.Read More
Careless Jewel is the definition of lone speed for the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, the headline event on day one of the two-day 2009 Breeders' Cup from Santa Anita. Primary rivals include Music Note, Life Is Sweet and Cocoa Beach.Read More
There’s on old adage that says the more things change, the more they stay same. Keep that in mind when you handicap the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1). The dynamic three-year-old filly whose name is on the tip of everyone’s tongue may be skipping this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup. Yet in the year’s r...Read More
With Zenyatta's (Street Cry [Ire]) connections opting to send their champion for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), the Ladies' Classic one day prior could prove to be a contentious affair. There are a number of distaffers in with a chance, but the following three are my top choices for the 1 1/8-mile ...Read More
  • Medlocke · I agree with the author's comment's on Music Note and Careless Jewel, but frankly I think Lethal Heat is a bit overrated. She's not nearly as accomplished this year as Music Note and Careless Jewel have been. I like Careless Jewel's speed to hold up and win the Ladies Classic, but not without a challenge from Music Note. I like Zenyatta's stablemate to get up in the money as well, Life is Sweet has ran very well over the surface and at Santa Anita. She's never been worse than 4th in her whole career, and has very rarely finished out of the money, even getting up for 3rd against the boy's in the Hollywood Gold Cup. At morning line odd's of 8-1, that make's her a "sweet" bet to hit the board in the Ladies Classic. · 1296 days ago ·

  • Medlocke · With Zenyatta now having moved on to greener pasture's, Careless Jewel, imo, is the filly to beat in the Ladies Classic. I think her front running speed hold's up on an already fast track. Music Note will likely let herself get caught up in a speed duel with Careless Jewel on the front end. With that in mind, and fast fraction's likely to be set, Life is Sweet closes late on a tiring Music Note to get 2nd leaving Music Note coming home 3rd. jmo. · 1297 days ago ·

  • Lmaris · I think she would still the one to beat. I don't think Music Note can run with Careless Jewel who has a far higher cruising speed than the other fillies. Life is Sweet will be where she's been for her other races this year - up the track. · 1296 days ago ·

Cocoa Beach and Music Note have been here before. In 2008, at the end of long campaigns, they were still able to finish second and third, respectively, to Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita.Read More
  • Rossington · Music Note and Cocoa Beach will be a dangerous duo only if Zenyatta goes to the Classic. Otherwise, I'd say Music Note has a chance to show in the race. If Zenyatta defects from the Ladies Classic, I see the Ladies Classic ending as 1st-Careless Jewel 2nd-Music Note 3rd-Life is Sweet. That would be my Ladies Classic tri-fecta minus Zenyatta. · 1298 days ago ·

Rachel Alexandra isn't coming and Zenyatta is leaning to the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). However, anyone who believes that doesn't leave much for the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) needs to think again.Read More
  • Rossington · Unless she just totally collapses, with Zenyatta likely out of the Ladies Classic, Careless Jewel should, if she runs to form, win the Ladies Classic. Most expect Music Note to run well, but Cocoa Beach, Lethal Heat or Rainbow View seem to be the talk of who's likely to complete the tri-fecta. I think Life is Sweet hit's the board in this race. Managing to finish 3rd to the boys in the Hollywood Gold Cup, she can certainly get up to place or show in the Ladies Classic imo. · 1300 days ago ·

  • Rossington · If this article from Bloodhorse magazine is accurate, it's nice to see the connection's of Zenyatta finally realize that this is it, this is her time to shine. Moss seems to think that winning the Classic could possibly garner HOY nomination's. That is doubtful, as HOY is already going to go to Rachael Alexandra. An awful big honor for a filly that's beaten sub-par males 3 times and the same old fillies, like Zenyatta, the other five. I look at it from this perspective, Rachael Alexandra is 8-0 this year, Zenyatta is 13-0 forever. A 13-0 record or even an 8-0 record is very difficult to accomplish in any era of racing. Usually the law of averages catches up to you first. But should Zenyatta win the Breeders Cup Classic, and I know that's a big if, she will have in 1 race beaten a field of males that's 10x fold more impressive than any male field that R.A. has ever, or will ever race. Tell me when R.A. will ever race Rip Van Winkle, Gio Ponti, Summer Bird, Quality Road, Einstein and possibly even Mastercraftsman in the same race. She's not likely to ever even race 2 of these horses in the same race. If Zenyatta beat's this field of males, and retires 14-0, it would be absolutely criminal, imo, not to give her at the very least co-HOY. · 1303 days ago ·

Zenyatta worked six furlongs in 1:11.20 at Hollywood Park Oct. 23 in her first work since winning the Oct. 10 Lady's Secret Stakes (gr. I). Jockey Mike Smith was aboard, and the mare worked in company with Green Day and Sabina Fay.Read More
Okay, I’ll admit it…I was against ZENYATTA last year in the Ladies’ Classic. I ignored the objective data and sided with instinct and hope that breeding would allow MUSIC NOTE to run a solid gold race. • Rossington · I think this article is spot on. I think Careless Jewel, Music Note, and some of the Euro contenders that are sure to come will be more than enough challenge for Zenyatta. I love this horse. One of my all time favorite's, but she's not likely to beat the males that will run in the Classic. She'll be hard pressed, and spent just to hit the board. Quite frankly, Careless Jewel and her front running speed will provide all the test Zenyatta needs if she, C.J., run's to form. This will be the best group, by far, of fillies that Zenyatta has faced since she beat Ginger Punch at Oaklawn in 2008. I'd rather see her go out with a good chance of being 14-0 against a very reputable group of fillies than take a chance of being out of the money by trying to defeat the best males in the world, not just the U.S. · 1311 days ago ·

This year's Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) is shaping up to be a repeat of 2008, with most of the same cast and crew re-opposing reigning champion ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]). Even if Zenyatta goes this route instead of the Classic, first wins the Lady's Secret, with the kind of year Careless Jewel, Icon Project, Swift Temper, and Music Note have had, beating this group and ending her season at 14-0 should put her in the discussion for at least co-HOY, unless Summer Bird wins the Classic. Then it's a done deal, or should be. But baring Summer Bird winning the Classic and Zenyatta ending 14-0 it must be considered. It's not Zenyatta's fault that Rachael Alexandra is shunning the Breeders Cup. I thought championship caliber horses were supposed to run in championship caliber races.
