What the Nation is saying about the 2009 Belmont Stakes (G1)...

ESPN's telecast of the 2009 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) has won the Media Eclipse Award for National Television â€" Live Racing. The Belmont Stakes program was aired on ABC on June 6, 2009 from Belmont Park.Read More
The third leg of racing’s Triple Crown has been the undoing of many champions aspiring for all-time greatness.  It is the site of many historical performances and it’s place in racing’s landscape as big and broad as the racetrack over which it’s contested.  Read More
Without a Triple Crown on the line, this year's TV coverage of the June 6 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) attracted approximately half the number of viewers as last year, when Big Brown was attempting to win the Triple Crown at Belmont Park.Read More
As a tribute to Birdstone’s remarkable feat of siring two different winners of a Triple Crown race in the same year (the first stallion to do so since Count Fleet in 1951), and from his first crop no less, I am re-printing my 2004 Belmont Stakes recap from the Blood-Horse. (Sorry, it’s pretty long).Read More
Dunkirk exited Saturday's runner-up finish in the Belmont S. (G1) with a non-displaced condylar fracture in his left hind cannon bone and will likely be sidelined the rest of the year. Read More

  • mshutty · Well, so much for my prediction that Dunkirk and Summer Bird will prove to be better horses than Mine That Bird as we get into late Summer and Fall racing. You have to have all four legs working to run and apparently Dunkirk wasn't durable enough to sustain his bid. Very unfortunate for Dunkirk but great for the "Birds" (Summer and Mine That) connections. Birdstone will be well-represented in the Summer and Fall classics. · 975 days ago ·

The fact that the Arkansas Derby is not a Grade I stakes race is absolutely ridiculous. Of the past 18 Triple Crown races, six winners have come out of the Arkansas Derby, and that doesn't include Rachel Alexandra, who won two races at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs before winning this year's Preakness...Read More

Summer Bird might have won the race, but the real winner might have actually been Marylou Whitney and Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky.Why? Well, Summer Bird and Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird come from the same father, Birdstone, who won the 2004 Belmont Stakes. Birdstone is owned by Whitney a...Read More
Although TV ratings fell for the June 6 telecast of the Belmont Stakes on ABC, that figured to be the case because of the lack of a horse running for the Triple Crown.Read More
Belmont day has come and gone and we were treated to a number of awesome performances with the day capped by Summer Bird’s victory.  Here are some idle thoughts:Is there a horse in the country that’s more fun to watch than Fabulous Strike when he’s on his game?  After a heart-breaking defe...Read More
On D-Day, a colt named Dunkirk put up the fight of his life down the sandy stretch at Belmont Park. After leading nearly all of 11/2 miles in the June 6 Belmont Stakes, the rangy Todd Pletcher trainee -- a $3.7 million auction purchase -- was passed by a late-closing Summer Bird. But his gritty batt...Read More
  • Duvalier · Gotta give Dunkirk credit...he showed alot of heart, battling back inside of Mine That Bird to regain second after being passed in the stretch...this after he set some pretty good fractions early on. · 977 days ago ·

  • mshutty · Agree! Dunkirk inherited the lead, cut decent fractions and came on again like Silver Charm in the stretch. This colt has some courage and character. We'll hear more from this one in the months ahead · 977 days ago ·

Said Jayaraman, "He was a standout. He was strong. (But) he originally didn't have the explosive speed of a sprinter. We kept him on the farm, trained him on the farm on the track. We thought he was a good horse. All the rest of the work was done by (trainer) Tim Ice, and I thank him.""Read More

Surprise Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird has a strong connection to Louisiana Downs. His conditioner Tim Ice was new to the training scene when he came to LAD last year. I was also a newbie in Louisiana, and Mr. Ice came to my office and read my form on day last summer. Less than one year later he...Read More
1. This track will eat you up. We should all be used to this by now. For the last 30 years, when something has been on the line at Belmont, there has been nothing to count on but disappointment. Eleven times since 1979 -- seven times in the last 12 years -- a horse has come to New York with a shot a...Read More
Summer Bird took down the Belmont Stakes while Mine That Bird, the heavy-favorite, faded to be third. The Belmont Stakes was Summer Bird's fifth career start and his second victory.Read More
The main track June 5 was extremely sloppy, but as the workers finished up the morning of June 6, the track looked perfect. The bigger question, of course, is the turf course. A hefty wind, which would help dry out the ground, was not in evidence early on Belmont morning. There are two graded stakes...Read More
We have a 10-race card on tap at Louisiana Downs on June 6th, and a big crowd is expected to come out and root for hometown hero Calvin Borel in the Belmont Stakes. Before I look at the Belmont and Saturday card at LAD, let’s recap the last two racedays… Read More
Though the forecast for Saturday calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 70s, the spate of wet weather that has hovered over Belmont Park for the last two days has created extremely sloppy conditions.
