Future Derby Winner? Possible or Impazible?
Does Saturday's Louisiana Derby winner have the pedigree for a Derby win? Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds takes a look if this is truly a Mission Impazible?

many WINNERS suppossedly did not have the pedigree. What the individual does, an NOTHING ELSE determines if they can win.

I agree that pedigree is not the only determination of a Derby winner, but it is one tool among many that can help separate the pretenders from the contenders. A horses heart, temperament, conformation, soundness and training regimen, and how well the jockey fits the horse all play an important part. Then there's that little thing called luck.

Many people want to knock Mission Impazible's stamina capabilities and they usually try to do it through his dam, using Forest Camp as the example. What many people fail to realize is that Forest Camp is the ONLY one of La Paz's seven winners who failed to win a race at one mile or farther. MI's other graded stakes winning half brother, Spanish Empire, won going 10 furlongs in Allowance company and competed in 10 furlong stakes races.

Until each and every three year old enters and runs a 9 frulong race, you will not have a handle of what will happen the first Satruday in May..I would also discount the syntogarbage races.

Had to sweat two photos. Grindstone/Cavonnier for the win + Halo Sunshine/Unbridled's Song to round out the super. The racing gods were smiling that day!

I remember tossing the 1-5 exacta ticket in the garbage and then moments later realizing my pick, Editors Note, was coupled with Grindstone. Found the ticket with ketchup smudge and all!

1996 Kentucky Derby (G1)
OK... watch this race... and tell me if you don't see this. McCarron is in a perfect spot with Cavonnier turning for home. But there's one problem. At the quarter pole, Unbridled's Song, the big favorite looks like he's cruising. So McCarron does what he should... he gives everything to go after the favorite - but U.S. wilts - and Cavonnier is already by him by the 1/8th pole. But now he's still got an 1/8th of a mile to go and the race isn't over.... and unfortunately, he gets nipped on the wire. I'm not suggesting it was a bad ride. What I am saying is that if it was anyone but the huge favorite out in front, McCarron probably waits another 1/16th of a mile and then he doesn't get caught. But that's the Derby fate... it was to smile on Baffert later on... And yes, it was unfortunate. Because Cavonnier was a cool horse... and Grindstone... well, he was a cripple that never raced again.
