Unbridled's Song beats them all to the wire with a better bill of health!
OK... watch this race... and tell me if you don't see this. McCarron is in a perfect spot with Cavonnier turning for home. But there's one problem. At the quarter pole, Unbridled's Song, the big favorite looks like he's cruising. So McCarron does what he should... he gives everything to go after the favorite - but U.S. wilts - and Cavonnier is already by him by the 1/8th pole. But now he's still got an 1/8th of a mile to go and the race isn't over.... and unfortunately, he gets nipped on the wire. I'm not suggesting it was a bad ride. What I am saying is that if it was anyone but the huge favorite out in front, McCarron probably waits another 1/16th of a mile and then he doesn't get caught. But that's the Derby fate... it was to smile on Baffert later on... And yes, it was unfortunate. Because Cavonnier was a cool horse... and Grindstone... well, he was a cripple that never raced again.
