1973 Kentucky Derby
Weakest Derby field I have looked at. Most were sprinters and G2 or G3 winners. Sham also smashed his face in the gate and lost a bunch of teeth.

I know this because I just looked up all the past performances from the horses in that Derby.

Forego: Probably the greatest handicap horse ever. Sham: also broke the track record that day while finishing second and having lost some teeth at the start

I'm sorry if I sound stupid. But, what is your definition of a weak field?

Secretariat? Legend. Forego? Legend. Sham? Probaly would have been a legend had it not been for Red.

My Gallant, Bluegrass, Angle Light, Wood Memorial, Sham, Santa Anita Derby, all 9f, grade 1 on dirt. They had won at that distance and Secretariat had not. So he was the one that wasn't proven to be able to handle more than 8.5 yet.

Lol what? The 1973 Derby field was full of quality. Secretariat and Sham and dont ever forget about the great Forego. Those three were some of the best racehorses ever, all in the same field. There is no way you can call it weak.

I've watched all his races and maintain the belief that in 8 of them no other horse could have beaten him. Ironically the three times I saw him live were losses. In most any other year I think sham would have been a triple crown winner so the competition was there.

It seems many times when when there is a horse that towers over his or her competition, people always say it was weak field. Secretariats competition was not weak with Forego, Riva Ridge (Marlboro Cup) Sham etc. he just overwhelmed everyone.
