The day I got to see my all-time favorite horse – Riva Ridge
Riva Ridge was the horse that got me interested in horse racing. To this day, he is still my all-time favorite. This is the story of my love affair with the “other” big, beautiful stallion from Meadow Stable.

I think this is a a very sweet story and thank you for sharing it with us. What wonderful memories you have and what a great dad you had to take you around to the horse farms.

Beautiful article, Rick. I cannot even imagine what it must have felt like to be able to see Secretariat and Riva Ridge. Talk about being awestruck!

The last time I saw Secretariat run in person was the 1973 Marlboro Cup. He was awesome, as was the 2nd place finisher that day ... Riva Ridge.

Great story and everything, but maybe you should get your facts right!! Riva Ridge ran in the Triple Crown Races in 1972, the year before his legendary stable mate which would have put him at 3 yrs old then. So tell me how he was in 1971 then? Maybe you should have someone edit your work before you post it

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Glad you enjoyed the story. (Muddy - good catch, my bad. He was born in 1969.)

Loved the story, brought back alot of memories. Was sad to read that Gun Bow was sent to Japan and no one knows what happened to him. I remember him racing against Kelso and also remember his great daughter Pistol Packer. I hope he didnot end up like Ferdinand

Well done Rick! Sadly I didn't get the chance to visit any farms while I was there for the BC. I really wanted to see Awad at Old Friends before he passed, since he was one of my all time favorites, but I'm hoping to visit some of the current stars in the coming years.

Beautifully written Rick. I felt like I was there with you tunnel visioned on a horse eating his lunch. Thanks for the smiles.

A superb story, Rick. It's a shame that you could not keep the letter that meant so much to you.

We should all be so lucky to see as to meet our Rivas. He was the one who saved the farm, as wonderful as all that and more. And agree about the running in tandem-very companiable- before people and all else stepped in and the Big Red had to move on.

What the hell, how easy is THAT to duplicate??? Apologies, and now I understand the Fly Lexus Fly triplicate. Erase one and paste in that I am THRILLED for Jackson Bend, who I ADORE, John Velazquez, who I adore, Nick Zito and all the others. And huge thx John V. for the thrilling excellent ride you gave Hollinger, Roger Attfield and owners. Oh to have been there.

Did they weigh Riva's heart when he died? Was he capable of the speed and endurance that Big Red had??
