Wednesday's 8th race (5:30PM PT) from Del Mar is a $40,000 Maiden Claiming event for CA-bred or sired 2-year-olds dashing five and one-half furlongs on Polytrack.

#8 Cactus Breeze (6-1) drops into a Maiden Claimer and tries synthetic for his new trainer. The Turf Paradise transplant showed ability in career bow and there is nothing wrong with Bejarano taking the call. His low profile trainer is enjoying a successful meet.

#7 Wild And True (7-2) was squeezed at the start and rallied wide for the show in his solid Hollywoodl bow July 1. The recently hot Craig Dollase is 24% with second time starters and he shows two local drills for this.

The Plays:

$12 to win #8

$10 Quinella 7-8

10 cent Superfecta 8/5-7-13/5-6-7-11-13/2-5-6-7-11-13 ($4.80)

10 cent Superfecta 7-8/5-7-8/5-7-8-13/2-5-6-7-8-11-13 ($3.20)

This is a WIDE open contest amongst a group of babies still learning to run. Maiden graduates signal their intent to graduate by running progressively "farther" into each pace scenario they come up against. Both 9 Golden Warrior and 13 Mr. Gennaro have faced the faster pace challenges: usually a good sign of things to come. The 7 has shown that the horse "gets it" as well.

I would downplay races from Turf Paradise to Del Mar where the 8 has run all those long days ago against feeble pace challenges....BUT THIS RACE IS WIDE OPEN AND ANYTHING COULD WIN IT.
