Santa Anita Race 6:

Selection: Final Step, the 4 horse.

There is a Pick 6 Carryover at Santa Anita today, and Final Step looks like the best single in the sequence.

Final Step makes the second start of his career today. In his debut, at Del Mar, he was extremely impressive. He broke well from the outside post, alternately dueled for the lead and forced the solid pace, went wide around the turn, got carried out even wider leaving the turn, and kept to his task in the stretch. For his efforts he earned a strong speed figure of 82.

Final Step moves from synthetic to real dirt today. His trainer, Pete Miller, has had a lot of success with this move, getting a TimeformUS rating of 88. In addition, Miller gets terrific ratings with first dirt, a 99, and second start of career, a 90. He also gets a strong rating of 86 when sending out horses with spacing similar to today's.

Final Step adds blinkers today and figures to get competition for the early lead from Maximinus. However, Maximinus was unable to hold onto a clear early lead in his last start even though he cornered beautifully on the tight turns at Barretts. Frankly, we doubt that he will prove up to the task of dealing with Final Step at the top of the stretch today.

There look to be some talented first-time starters in this field, but they will have to be talented indeed to beat Final Step if he improves at all off of that debut, and Final Step has been training forwardly for this race.

Final Step is our single.
