Monday's opening race from Mountaineer is a $17,600 Maiden Special Weight affair for 3-year-olds and up traveling six furlongs on the main track. 

#5 Big Punch (4-1) had an inconclusive debut after taking up at the start in the mud. He exits a speed/fade trip at a flat mile and could be poised to break through in his third lifetime start. A shrewd veteran handicapper I used to hang out with at the track made a living on this type of turnback runner and the gelded son of Magna Graduate should offer a hint of value for the productive Hernandez/Garcia team.

when you use incremental velocity and energy distribution, maidens are easy except no one wants to accept it. Just find the horse(s) that are stretching their speed further at each outing. They win like a formula and at odds ALL the time and EVERY track. Pass races with more than three firsters or one that has taken a lot of action.....This has been my best ROI now for over 10 yeaers.
There are those who may disagree with me...but 2 y.o.s are the most unpredictable animals on the grounds. This is one of those races. I agree with the pick as a contender. And the horse does have speed and good connections. The other two contenders are the #2 (a 1TS) and the sleeper and my choice the #10 Shooter's Mark (10/1). Also has shrewd connections, speed, 2nd time lasix and trainer does very well with this type. Bet #10 to win. Exacta box 2, 5, 10...and hope for the best. Good luck!!!
