Ground Transport lands better post in Illinois Derby

Saturday's 8th race (5:15pm CT) from Hawthorne is the Grade III Illinois Derby for 3-year-olds traveling nine furlongs on the main track.

#5 Ground Transport (8-1) cannot possibly go off at 8-1 after racing wide from post 13 and finishing a solid 5th in the G2 Louisiana Derby. He ended up less than two lengths behind today's favorite Departing in that one and his nemesis also beat him when they both debuted at Fair Grounds (six furlongs) Dec. 22. My top had his 2-race win streak snapped last out but his numbers continue to climb and he draws favorably today.

#8 Abraham (8-1) graduated at this distance in the slop (Gulfstream) second time out and followed that up with a show finish in the G3 Sunland Derby after dueling on the lead. The WinStar colt might get brave if able to sneak away early under Castellano.

#13 Departing (7-2) clearly has talent but is he good enough to overcome his tough luck at the draw? He won his first three starts and exits a rock solid show finish in the Louisiana Derby. A wide stalking trip is the likely card that he has been dealt.

#4 For Greater Glory (15-1) is my live longshot to complete the Trifecta. He fell far back early in the Battaglia (3rd) and Spiral (6th) but finished in the Top 3 in all four dirt starts and showed tactical speed each time.

The Plays:

$10 to win, $12 to place #5

.50 cent Trifecta 5-8-13/ALL/4 ($18)

O.K. Here is the gut buster of the day...I can't understand why the m.l on this horse is so high. Horse can certainly handle the distance, is a big tryer and is always there...I guess it's because the horse is stepping up...#10 Fordubai (20/1). Only two other contenders I see, #2 Dewey Square and #9 Show Some Magic...all good prices! Bet #10 to win and exacta box...10/2/9. Good luck!!!
