Wednesday's 8th race (5:30PM PT) from Del Mar is the G1 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds traveling seven furlongs on Polytrack.

#7 Western Mood (7-2) was forced to do the pace dirty work chasing his nemesis #4 J P's Gusto (5-2) through below par splits in the 6.5 furlong Best Pal (G2) here Aug 8. The Hollendorfer trainee is best as a late-runner and figures to revert to patient tactics under Rosario today. Off the pace and into the winners' circle at a hint of a price.

Hollendorfer also has #8 Indian Winter (5-1). The Indian Charlie colt was a professional stalk and pounce winner of his even money local bow. Bejarano sticks and he could easily be this good.

J P's Gusto (5-2) has won three straight Stakes races but his numbers are not getting any better. He is losing his experience edge as the rest of the crop catches up to the early bloomer and he may be reaching the outer limits of his distance comfort zone. Underlaid contender.

#2 Riveting Reason (12-1) earned much better Pace Ratings second time out and that is a positive sign for the Myung Kwon Cho trainee. He sports a bullet for this and his profitable, low profile conditioner is capable of pulling a surprise.

The Plays: $24 to win #7, $2 Quinella 7/2-8 ($4), $1 Trifecta 7-8/2-4-7-8/2-4-7-8 ($12)

Essentially a two horse contest between the pace horse, 4 JP's (pace numbers not getting better? What the heck are you reading??? as he is ranked, respective of his last, 3rd and 4th back: 1st, 2nd and 5th) and the later moving 7 Western Mood although the former has run much more impressively. One cannot evaluate the English shipper (Major Art, placed in a grade two at Goodwood) here so that one has to be considered.

If the 8 runs anywhere like his debut, he will cross the line about the time the filed pulls up on the backstretch.

Never forget the first Del Mar Futurity I saw. There was a colt in the paddock surrounded by well wishers actually WHISPERING things in Spanish into his ear. I thought they were a group on nuts until years later when I looked over that program and realized it was Canonero II they had been speaking to,
