Sunday's 6th race (4:30pm PT) from Del Mar is the first division of the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby for 3-year-olds traveling nine furlongs on the turf course.

#7 Gabriel Charles (7-2) has been eyeing this spot since flying home to just miss in the second division of the 8f Oceanside on opening day. He went his final two furlongs in :22.31 and his final 1/8 in :11 last time, and he can motor past these under Mike Smith in his second start of the year.

#8 Gervinho (3-1) won the first division of the Oceanside under Rafael Bejarano, who is 3-for-4 with him. Quality trainer Carla Gaines is back from suspension and he could get first run on these.

#5 Procurement (5-1) is back in SoCal for Tom Proctor and he captured the 9f La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year. His local 5f move on 8-26 got high marks and profitable turf rider Gary Stevens clicks with this outfit.

The Plays:

$28 to win #7

$6 Quinella 7/5-8 ($12)

Contenders before scratches: #8, 11, 3, 7. The ML favorite #8 Gervinho (3/1) is legitimate and is the class of the race. Therefore, I would not bet against him, especially with the meets leading rider aboard and the trainer Carla Gaines back from suspension. No real value here but if you must, bet #8 to win. Exacta...8/all. Tri...8/11, 3, 7, 9/all. Good luck!!!
