Friday's 5th race (6:00pm PT) from Del Mar is a $40,000 Maiden Claiming affair for 3-year-olds and up dashing five and one-half furlongs on Polytrack. 

#9 Mi Hijo (4-1) shows up for sale after facing special weight company in his last four. He goes route/sprint and turf/synthetic and Gomez is clicking with Miller recently.

#2 Broker Brett (3-1) finished 3rd in a $62.5k Maiden Claiming sprint at BHP June 13 and the top two both came back to score. The fresh colt should be finishing for the productive Maldonado/Sadler team.

#6 Southern Sunrise (5-2) is tagged for the first time and is probably the one to catch under Stevens. 

#4 Expo and Fig (8-1) debuts for 16% win early sire Star Dabbler and dam has tossed four winners from as many starters. D'Amato shows a profit with first time starters.

This is a very difficult race as there are a few contenders who can win if the favorite doesn't fire. That is #6 Southern Sunrise (5/2) who appears to have it all on paper. But, however, may be vulnerable due to being a chronic hanger. If the favorite hangs again then the two long shots that I see can produce a nice pay off...#4 Expo and Fig (8/1) FTS from a prolific dam with a good rider (J. Talamo). Or, one that will be a totally overlooked shipper #11 Brynel (20/1) ridden by P. Val. My preference would be to bet the first time starter #4 to win. With an exacta box 6/4/11. Tough race.
