Thursday's 3rd race (3:00PM PT) from Del Mar is a straight Maiden event for state bred or sired 3-year-olds and up traveling a flat mile on the turf.

#6 Alley Hondro (7-2) has improved since returning from a layoff and switching barns. Ellis is 24% 3rd off the shelf and he is bred well enough for turf.

#2 Romeo Royale (5-1) failed to threaten in local Polytrack sprint bow Aug 1. The 3yo son of Unusual Heat should like turf and there is nothing wrong with Bejarano climbing aboard.

#4 Swoon's Tune (20-1) is out of 29% first grass sire Jackpot and dam has tossed a turf winner. The second time starter adds blinkers and will probably attend the pace under Flores.

#3 Cantona (5-1) has had eight chances but fits on numbers and retains Rosario. I will use him underneath.

#8 Papa Lev (3-1) is wheeled back quickly and returns to preferred turf footing. He can go better for the overdue Abrams barn.

The Plays: $1 Trifecta Key 6/2-3-4-8 ($12), $1 Trifecta 2-4-6/2-4-6/2-3-4-6-8 ($18) - analysis by Jarrod Horak

Both the 3 Cantona and the in and outer 7 Full Effect show more the label of a turfer ready to graduate from a maiden running style. Either the 9 Dr. Chen, or if they send him, the 3 Catona could push this field along for quite a bit but the 3 and 7 have turf credentials here. the 6 has only slightly improved and could be around for part of this underneath......The big improvement is cosmetic at best since Alley Hondro has neither shown the speed to be on the cusp of a maiden win nor the late move indicative of a true turfer
