Sunday's 7th race (5:10pm PT) from Del Mar is an Optional Claiming event for 3-year-olds and up traveling a mile and a sixteenth on Polytrack.

#1 Death Star (6-1) looked good in synthetic route graduation run at BHP May 13. The improving 4yo colt rallied for the show in first start vs. winners June 30 and occupied that same spot in his lone local outing last year. Mike Smith sticks with the John Shirreffs trainee and he could find the winners' circle with another forward move.

#9 Shaun Washington (5-2) finished 2nd in same race my top exits and the 3yo colt may have found a home on all-weather footing. Martin Garcia got to know him last time and is riding well at the current stand.

The Plays:

$18 to win #9

$12 Quinella 1-9

8/4 exacta, not great but cashable

If the 2, Brigand had run his last few on the poly that one would be hands down the choice here but that ones record on the rubber has not been that good. Still the pacesetter to catch here. The experienced poly runner who shows the dominance here has to be the 4 with many a run that ranks that one a good chance at moving toward this field late to overtake the pacesetter. The 6 Acafella and 8 Jacinto can come late for a part as well, as the 9 comes out of some SLOW races that do not bode well for that one here.
