Normandy Invasion in the Gr. I Kentucky Derby

Today’s eleventh race (5/4) at Churchill Downs is the 139th running of the $2,000,000 Kentucky Derby.  This race is for three years olds of course running the classic distance of a mile and a quarter over the dirt.

Scratches: #1 Black Onyx

#5 – Normandy Invasion (12-1) is coming off a hard closing second place in the Gr. I Wood Memorial back on April 6th.  The Chad Brown trainee has just missed in races going a mile and an eighth so the increase in distance could prove vital.  With some good works in hand, a good post position, and a solid jock in Castellano I like this colts chances.

#16 – Orb (7-2) is one of the power houses in this race along with Verrazano.  The Claude McGaughey horse has won four races in a row with his most recent being in the Gr. I Florida Derby.  This horse seems like he can turn on the jets at will so I think he will have plenty left in the tank.  Joel Rosario will ride Orb today.

#19 – Java’s War (15-1) looks like an outside contender here but I did like the way he closed in the Blue Grass Stakes.  The War Pass colt will have to be a little closer to the pace today but if he can close over the Keeneland synthetic I believe he can here as well.  One to consider for the exotics.

#6 – Mylute (15-1) will have Rosie Napravnik in the saddle today.  The Midnight Lute horse was last seen just missing the first place in the Louisiana Derby back on March 30th.  The grey colt has a couple different running styles and with the track condition in limbo you may see him closer than ususal.

#14 – Verrazano (4-1) is one of five Todd Pletcher horses in this race and between Revolutionary and  Verrazano I think those two have the best shots.  The More Than Ready colt was last seen winning the Wood Memorial however it did not look like he had much left in him.  The undefeated horse will likely contest the pace early on.  John Velazquez will be in the saddle.

$10 win, place, show 5

$3 Exacta Box 5,16

$1 Trifecta 5/16, 5/16/19/6, 5/19/6/14/12

LOL, yea I figured you would like that. Pletcher has five running in this race so it will be interesting to see which ones performs best. Good luck with your plays today as well.
How dare you leave off Revolutionary, Josh. Just knew you would pick the NY horse, lol. Good luck!
