Cease a fresh threat in G1 Clark Handicap

Friday's 11th race (5:35pm ET) from Churchill Downs is the Grade 1 Clark Handicap for 3-year-olds and up traveling a mile and an eighth on the main track.

#5 Cease (5-1) won a 9f affair at the Spa off a similar layoff in July. Stall can do no wrong at the current stand and all four of his career wins were accomplished at this distance. Mena has booted him home before and he is a tight fit on numbers. He gets pace to chase and should offer a hint of value.

Play our Black Friday $20k game at DerbyWars.com.

#1 Pool Play (5-1) won the G1 Foster here in 2011 and beat my top in the G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup in October. Mena abandons for my top and he will try to get involved late under new pilot Lanerie.

#10 Lunar Victory (6-1) is a razor sharp NY-bred with a 3-for-3 record at nine panels. He owns strong numbers but gets tested for class here.

I have never been a fan of #3 Shackleford and the frequent money burner will almost certainly take too much action in his swan song. The 2-time local winner has dropped three straight and has not won a two turn race in quite some time. He looms a pace player at the very least along with #6 Take Charge Indy (8-1).

The Plays:

$10 to win, $14 to place #5

$4 Exacta 5/1-10 ($8)

$4 Exacta 1-10/5 ($8)

PLUS every study EVER done on racing time with and without furosemide found it only helped, and then jsut marginally, in geldings no one else.

If I gave an arthritic pateint that combination and they had bleeding, especially occult bleeding, the malpractice attorney would be smacking his lips and for good reason.

FUROSEMIDE the biggest joke in racing. How can ANYTHING give a horse the edge ehwne 95% of the horses are using it. Are YOU different the first time you take a medication than lets say the 5th or 20th day. This DOGMA, the outright LIES, persist because no one ever logicall challenges them. A Potassium waster only reduced Potassium and its attendant water. Whether that, ESPECIALLY SINCE MOST are also taken the very potent plaltelet inhibitor butazolidin, which MARKEDLY INCREASE their chances of bleeding, is just plain PHARMACOLOGICALLY STUPID to say the least. Lets give him some thing to stop the bleeding after we gave him something that made him bleed. The STUPIDITY should have a neon sign on it 20 feet high.

To Nate: I consider a horse first time lasix if the horse has been on a layoff for 30 days or more (a line over last race).

This is a good betting race. #3 Shakelford will undoubtedly be the betting choice and rightfully so. He is a great horse. But I don't believe he is the winner today. Contenders are: #3, 4, 5, and 9, before scratches. This race begs for a price horse. After looking carefully at this race, I believe it comes down to two horses, #4 Bourbon Courage (15/1) and #5 Cease (5/1). I'm going with the #4 Bourbon Courage who has the best connections, goes 1st time lasix, and is improving on paper. Bet #4 to win. Exactas...4/all. Tri...4/3, 9, 10, 8, 7/all, if you have the bankroll for it. I prefer to bet win, exactas and doubles in and out, all/4, 4/all. Good luck on a tough race!!!
