According to Baffert, Dortmund was only 95%. This and the fact Dortmund surged back and passed CC after the wire(they switched leads several times) IMO implies two things. Dortmund probably would have won if he was 100%(it still would have been incredibly close) and that Dortmund wasn't tired(which seeing that time is a very positive sign especially seeing his distance concerns which are real but not completely validated) Both horses impressed(they obliterated the rest of the tiny field) and the margin between the two is close at 8.5. The Pacific will come down to whether Dortmund really has distance issues. Either way if Beholder proves the Pacific Classic was a fluke both will probably be defeated from what they've demonstrated at 10(CC should be the second choice)
Hoppertunity is finally pointing to a G3 or lower race in almost 2 years. I know many California Chrome's fans don't like to hear about Hoppertunity being a G3 horse, but the fact is G3 or lower grade are the only races Hoppertunity can win at this point.
  • Ruffianlover · Winning the San Antonio, running a nice second in the Clark last year and a nice third in Dubai in the most loaded field of the year so far does not make this horse a grade three quality horse. He is more consistent than many of the 'top' horses · 2 days ago
  • carlymay · Pegram cashes a check every time Hoppertunity runs. He has hit the board in 15 out of 20 lifetime starts, and has held form into a 5yo campaign. He is competing exactly where he should be. · 46 minutes ago
Red Barons Barn's Dutchessa broke down just after the wire. The injury came after a laboring run in the stretch for the John Martin-trained 7-year-old Dutch Art mare, who was making her first dirt start. After fracturing both sesamoids in her left front leg, Dutchessa was euthanized on the track. She had a 7-5-7 record from 33 starts before the race Saturday.
Just want to acknowledge this young rider. He lost his bug last year and since has won a handful of graded stakes both at Monmouth and Gulfstream and currently sits 2nd in the Monmouth Park standings only behind perennial leader Paco Lopez. He brought home a 20-1 shot in the listed Lamplighter Stakes doing so on the front end, something he has had a lot of success with this year. Hats off and lots of luck to him.
Church social, is the best bet.. just win baby¡¡¡
Dortmund and Chrome were 7.5 lengths ahead of Win the Space who ran a huge 107 beyer last time out. I wonder what the fig is going to be for this race.
WHAT A RACE!!!!!! 2nd Ain't all that bad when u get beat by a nose 💙❤️ Congrats to both horses
CC gave Dortmund quite a few pounds - it is a handicap!!! not a weight for age .....a good job on weight assignment having the 1 - 2 horses that close
The only thing that could have made this race better was if chrome and Dortmund hoof bumped after Gary and victor did. What a race!!!!!!
Congratulations to Dortmund on a great race. I'm sure we will be seeing much more from him in the next few months. I hope he races next year.
With all of the concerns about those four horses breaking down on DM's track, today, I was more than just a bit nervous about watching the race. Waited until afterwards to watch the replay and must say that this was what racing is all about. Those two magnificent chestnut horses dueling it out and with the champ, Chrome, winning it but with Dortmund giving Chrome a real run for the money. Nice to see the old Dortmund, that I remember from his 3-yr-old season, being gutsy and grinding it out to the best he can. What a race! What a treat for racing fans! Now, I just hope that both trainers take their horses out for a stroll on the beach at the track -- if that is still allowed there. Those two horses earned a lot of pampering and spoiling -- and extra carrots and peppermints.
Couldn't be more proud of my boy had he won. He is officially the second best older male in the country and there is no shame running a fighting second to an all time great. Kudos to the connections of CC. Both horses ran a huge race. It lived up to all the hype and more. An incredible race to watch. We have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
Nathan, spoke with Boots. This guy is the ticket in the Charger/Padre handicap. Obscene in the Mornings and Chrome just average. Today Dortmund beats Chrome
The Big Boy is back Big Time! I couldn't be prouder of Dortmund!
This race is exactly why I love Dorty. Yes, Chrome was my pick and always will be, but I have such a soft spot for this big guy. He is no slouch and he put up one heck of a fight. This is what I wanted to see and I can't wait until these two hook up again. Awesome job Dorty!
People don't realize how big a race that is off an 8 month layoff but keep hatin'. Acting like 5lbs is a big deal, I never brought it up because it really has almost no effect. Really happy with the performance he ran, that was what I was hoping and it will move him forward. Again, Dortmund has never run a bad race in 11 starts except once and losing to the best horse in the world is nothing to be upset about. Chrome is good.
Mokat looked nice today. Songbird looks even better with Mokat's win
Damn I really thought Dortmund had this race because he seemed to be traveling easier on the backside than Chrome was. I think that was just because of how big Dortmund's stride is. I knew he was going to come back and fight it out when Chrome took the lead at the head of the stretch and thought he might get his head down before the wire but Chrome was too sharp today. Dortmund's a badass either way, ran a huuuge race and the final time was smoking. Interesting to see if Baffert keeps Dortmund around this distance up to 9 furlongs or if he's going to try 10 furlongs again in the Pacific Classic.
I always liked Mokat and thought she was talented. Ran and won a nice race today. Uncle mo is really making a name for himself.
Dortmund 2nd barely lost phenomenal race ...I don't want to hear that dortmund isnt in Ccs league 8 month layoff great race
