DeadHeat · I love Oaklawn. Both Lawyer Ron and Curlin, two of my faves came from their before the Derby. Also wise to note how often a horse coming from Arkansas runs in the top 4 finishers in the Derby. 2004 Smarty wins, 2005 Afleet Alex third, 2006 Stepanwolfer third, 2007 Curlin third, 2008 Eight Bells second, 2009 Papa Clem 4th, 2010 Super Saver won, 2011 Nehro second. I prefer dirt to synthetic for handicapping/wagering as well-so I prefer Hawthorne to Arlington. My fondest memory of Chicago racing was making a PILE of money on a horse called Rocket Twenty One who was given to me by a Facebook friend who goes by the handle "Mike Saratoga". One of the things I remember most when I first went to a morning workout was the being able to hear individual horses as they run by you on the rail. MaryMeek · I had never been to morning workouts at a track before since the local one (Churchill Downs) where I grew up didn't allow it. I even called them to ask but they seemed horrified by the idea of what they frostlly called an "unlicensed person" asking about such a thing (other than the special occasion "Dawn at the Downs." The person on the phone offered to sell me a tour instead.) Have since found been able to go to them at Oaklawn and Keeneland, where you don't need a license to watch the horses in the morning and even have some biscuits and gravy at the track kitchen. They seem happy to have us great unwashed and unlicensed folks. · 210 days ago ·

Agree... missing a workout is not good... but they did the same thing a couple of weeks before the Belmont. They let everyone know the horse was not going to breeze but was fine...

OK... first credit goes out to Tim Ice for a great training job with Summer Bird, and to the owners as the Jayaraman's have been in racing for a long time so it is nice to see them get a big win.

However, the idea that Summer Bird is now going for the Eclipse Award is a bit of a joke. He won the Belmont with a late run at a mile and a half against a depleted field. This guy would be lucky to win either the Haskell or the Travers, much less the BC.

Once he gets pounded by Musket Man and others in the Haskell... maybe they will figure it's best to stay home in the Super Derby!

Borel moved too soon and went too wide on Mine That Bird. Calvin Boo-rail... couldn't find the rail.

It was ironic that Desormeaux, who learned his lesson moving too soon on Real Quiet and got beat by Victory Gallop by a nose 11 years ago... showed the patience to get the win on Summer Bird, while Borel learned that same lesson of moving too soon today.
