By the time you get to the Belmont, a potential TC winner has to face, traveling fatigues, racing fatigues, added distance, and a field full of fresh contenders. AndyScoggin · The issue is that trainers nowadays peek their horses to win the Derby and then have to try and keep them on top of their game for 2 more races in 5 weeks. Orb has got the right connections behind him, Triple Crown type connections. It would be fitting that this group does what nobody else has done since 1978. Mike in SB · One advantage Orb has is that Belmont is his home track and Shug and the owners would probably want to win the Belmont more than any other race except for maybe the Derby, I expect him to be at the top of his game for the Belmont, like Easy Goer. One other thing is that he just looks to be the best by far of possibly a mediocre crop. I think he has a big shot at the Triple Crown. · 14 days ago ·

Sully · Ok cugel, let's play fun facts. Easy Goer was 3 for 6 lifetime when returning in 2 weeks or less. For the statistical enthusiast, that's 50%. Before the derby, he was 2 for 2 under these circumstances. That means he was 1 for 4 throughout the remainder of his career which were all in G1 races. Now, let's not forget these were completely different times where it was much more usual for a horse to return after 2 weeks rest. Orb also broke his maiden on 2 weeks rest (you apparently didn't know that because you didn't mention it). Again, as I said, very beatable. Can he win, yes, but the price you will get, "very beatable." Never said he can't win. TV, no comment. · 10 days ago ·

That was the beginning of his 5 race winning streak. Orb was coming off of a recent win over the track and also was able to stay far off the pace, taking advantage of a pace collapse. dani.pugh · Realize again, that in that maiden Orb had a fantastic pace to run at. He also made his own trouble at the gate. Also seriously dislike basing anything off of a maiden race when talking about three year olds. Orb is a nice colt who when he gets a good pace can take advantage of it and close. Also Brian, Speak Logistics, in third also closed. Not as well as Orb obviously, but he also came running. Two of the Top three were closers. Majestic Hussar only held off HHE, a horse i don't particularly like, by 3/4 of a length. Yes, Gulfstream has a bias, however that can only get you so far. That could clearly be seen with Majestic Hussar, Cerro, and SQ. Those finished 4th, 6th and 7th. When I look at the race, I realize there is typically a bias, however, you then look to see where the rest of th horses in the top four finished. They were well back, telling me that despite the bias, the pace was too fast. Violence, also was the only horse in the field that was making his first start of the year. The rest of that field had the benefit of a recent start, and yet with the lack of race conditioning, he was still the only colt to stay on at the end. Orb also had the momentum. He should have blown right by Violence, and looked like he was going to. Violence dug back in and didn't let him. Again, even with the lack of a recent race he was able to keep pace with Orb. Orb is a nice colt. I didn't like his chances here, i was wrong. However, when considering all of the factors I do strongly believe Violence ran the better race. Do remember that Cerro was right there, moving with him, before tiring to 6th. · 84 days ago ·

DeadHeat · Beyer doesn't make sense to himself anymore. For the Gulfstream Park Derby his intial Beyer was a 95, i believe. It was revised to a 102, much later. He now gives these horses a 97, after a wickedly contested pace and a resulting time that came with in 2/5ths of tying the track record. · 84 days ago ·

The only horses that i've seen in my lifetime that could be compared to Ruffian were Eight Belles and Rachel Alexandra. EB was an amazing talent that we lost much too early, she could have been anything, and to lose her hurt so much. Listening to Barclay Tagg Ruffians exercise rider say: "“Sure, they belong in the same breath,” said the trainer Barclay Tagg, "Rachel’s beaten the Kentucky Derby winner and she beat the Belmont winner, and won the Preakness. Yes, you have to compare them.” Not before and not since has such a comparison been made from the likes of those that were around Ruffian. She was that special, and it tells you about how much respect people have for Rachel to be mentioned with Ruffian. Considering though that Rachel broke 2 of Ruffian's Records in the Mother Goose the comparisons seem fitting and valid. LAZMANICK · Dubby................Well that makes two of you that compare Rachel to Ruffian, you and Barcly. Welcome to the real world. If you want to compare fillies winning a TC race then start with fillies that were Derby winners and which actually defeated multi G1 winning competitors (that had accomplished careers both before and after the TC series). That means you will have to start with WInning Colors and Genuine Risk. And if you want to make comparisons to fillies and all three TC races then start and end with Genuine Risk. And don’t even mention Ruffian and Rachel in the same breath, you might suffocate. Ruffian won at classic distances, and lost ground in a call only 3 times in 40 calls, pre match race. And you didn't answer. Perhaps being from Australia you are unaward that these aforementioned horses have won approximately 70 Grade 1 races, 7 Eclipse Awards and 8 Divisional Champions. There were people in Kentucky last November that said they've never seen a horse that captivated people's attention like Zenyatta did. lesleymorley · I will never forget that day. I was only ten and I cried the whole day. As for comparing her to Z—that's impossible. It was a different time. Those of us who saw her run and were watching CBS when Ruffian broke down know. I've said it here elsewhere, Ruffian was otherworldly. Watching her run was magical. But that was back in the days when racing was still like that. Fortunately, we all got to experience Zenyatta—and she retired sound, thank heavens. She brought some of the magic back to racing. We can only hope it lasts and the public that Zenyatta brought to the sport stick around. As long as they can keep things clean, I'm hopeful that all those Z fans out there come back for more. (I know that NBC is counting on it. I've been seeing ads on TV for their coverage at the Spa.) · 681 days ago ·

The Nba is in a lock-out, the cost of going to a NFL game is ridiculous,especially in a recession. Now is the time to bring Horse Racing to the forefront. Many states, Indian Reservations, have top notch poker games although they are thin on the variety. I personally favor CA, Fla. because serious money is there in the form of poker. I remember at age 18 horse was all there was but times change.
