AndyScoggin · On Saturday, the track at Pimlico was slow and favoring front runners and played to Oxbow, especially when he was left alone on the lead. Orb struggled against the track and managed to finish fourth. For a horse to win the Triple Crown he has to be able to overcome everything the comes their way. Orb could not do that. Anything that may be taken as detrimental to any horse should be transferred up to the jockey, trainer, owner, never the horse. Some things are just hilarious though, really no offense to anyone. dani.pugh · Jay, how can you say that when ever race he has won this year he has closed on the outside of his rivals? Being in traffic definitely affected him, as it does most horses. He never was able to make his run. I have watch the vid, i also watched the race in person. He had to back pedal when everyone was making their moves. By the time he did get moving the top three already had a sizable jump on him. He gave up valuable time and ground because of the position he was in. · 25 minutes ago ·

dani.pugh · He has overcome pace before and i think could have again. Had he drawn the outside he probably would have stalked and pounced, like the Florida Derby. But he got into traffic, had to back pedal and wait when others had the jump and were extending their advantage. Great horses do overcome more often than not. We say they are supposed to overcome everything, but did Zenyatta, Man o War, Secretariat or the Bid? No. Not saying Orb is of their standing, he still has a long way to go. When he tried to go between horses he ran up on the leaders because he had nowhere to go, since there were 2 or three other horses to his outside. Where was he supposed to go? dani.pugh · Jay, again i disagree. Joel went to move him up to gain position. When he did Departing was right at his flank. At first it was Will Take Charge. When Joel asked orb to accelerate he did, but Departing kept with him, not allowing him to move any farther out. You can't just run horses over. · 2 minutes ago ·

BTW, I only remember Slew's Tizzy, cause I played him in the Lexington Stakes, as the longest shot on the board @ 40-1, and he came in and won. Ironically, that particular race also had the 2nd longest of the race run 2nd(I think it was something like 38-1), and was trained by, none other than, D. Wayne Lukas. He's everywhere!!!!! Orb

Hey, y'all. I just need to point something out. When he was moving quickly on the inside at the 3/4th, he moved but quickly dropped back again. Did you notice when he moved to the outside part of the racetrack, he picked off colts? It's rare to see a horse break towards the rear, make a sudden move at the 3/4th's, drop back once again to second to last, and than make another move to reach 4th. Something tells me he doesn't like moving on the inside; not to mention the rail was DEAD all of Preakness day.. Just my two cents, I think he is BY FAR the best of this crop. Watch out for him to return with a vegenance in the Belmont and Midsummer classics.

2013 Belmont Stakes (G1)

i can see the headlines now.since the star power of orb has faded,the media and public will need a new post to hang their hats on.my prediction,it will be dreaming of julia.she will become everyones wise guy horse.even though she has accomplished hardly anything.she will be the headliner.the only thing i want for the belmont is a full competitive field.i am not looking to crown anyone a superstar or put them in the hall of fame.for this one only guys.let us make it about the race and not the individuals we want to star. regardless,the thing i enjoy the most about belmont stakes day is the same thing i enjoy about kentucky derby day.the undercards are incredible.they are the true stars of the day.after all it is racing that excites us.

Until Secretariat came along, the super horse was MOW and everyone was compared to him. Now it is Secretariat and Zenyatta, Ruffian or Rachel as the yardsticks. buckpasser · Take a look at the attendance when Zenyatta ran in the BC. And the number of people that came out for her half sister. How many people are watching for her foals to race and those of Rachel's. don't give me this zillionth time stuff. As to the racinos, once you had huge prices for yearlings, the only way you keep them on the track is to have large purses. The wagering at the majority of tracks does not keep the purses high enough withou additional monies from somewhere else. As to what comes out by marketing top horses, people turn out to see the horses. You had marketing for both Vijack and Verrazano to make the Wood a good race. Do you really think that if there weren't top horses to market that there would be people turning out, wagering or even would NBC or any other outlet bother to televise the races. · 4 hours ago ·

buckpasser · Take a good look at Ontario racing. The majority of monies for purses, in some cases almost 100 percent came from slots monies next to nothing at many of the tracks from wagering. Many of these tracks in Ontario are going from 130k to 30k because they are relying on wagering and nothing else. Southern.Humor · Velasquez - Dominguez tired for first. Both are very effective Jokies, and adaptable. They can both ride any horse. Then Gary Stevens & Nakatani. BOel could probably fit in there, but I don't like the fact he is so rail dependant. As far as up & coming Joel is My favorite. rafirox · Two things. First of all, I am going to post my top 5, since the site is pretty dead (quiet) today. Hopefully more join in the convo/debate later. At least today's been peaceful with no bullshit (I wonder why? lol.).. Second, Humor, I did not include Dominguez in my Top 5. I should have been more specific, but I was referring to active jockeys. Sorry for being unclear. Anyway. I know I'll receive some crap, possibly, but as long as Cocoa isn't on, I'm sure many people will have a DEBATE stance, not try to create an argument. My #1 is John Velasquez. The reason I put him above the rest is as simple as the fact he is Mr. Clutch. His stakes rides, for the main part, as superb. Perhaps a sentimental favorite, but I do believe that with Dominguez out, he's above the rest. #2 would be Joel Rosario. He truly is up and coming. He is the best currently, but I'm not sure how long he'll continue with that 25% winning percentage. #3 would be Rafael Bejarano. He is consistent. I love him with turf horses especially, and he can reel in stakes races often. #4 would be in the minority, but I'd say Giovanni Franco. Riding at Turf Paradise, he sports a 27% winning percentage. I'm sure many people have not heard of him, if they only follow big tracks, but this guy truly reels in winners. He's very talented at such a young age; he has the ability to go inside. This guy has balls, he's not afraid of weaving horses in traffic, and he gets things done while saving ground. #5 would be Mike Smith. I was thinking of giving Ramon Moya this spot, but I found it disrespectful considering how consistent and professional Mike Smith is. He is fantastic with closers, he's good on turf, and basically gets the job done. I know my order will probably be in the minority, but this is just my opnion. Keep in mind, Ramon Dominguez is ONLY off the list BECAUSE he is injured. Other Notables: Ramon Moya (really love his gutsy Parx rides; my wallet loves him), Gary Stevens (gets the job done. He's good at rating horses. He's good in stakes. rafirox · Humor, I appreciate the insight on this topic. I must ask, why do you rank Nakatani so high? I wouldn't even include him in my Top 15, to be honest but I wouldn't make a list that long. It generally appears to me that he only wins when given the best or 2nd best horse in the race and a stalking or on the lead trip. He doesn't usually stick out as someone who can deliver on a regular basis, on any running type, and on both surfaces. He doesn't ever give you that "OMG, what a ride!" To me it appears he is out of his prime. In regards to Smith, I'd definitely agree he is better on closers. He's ridden some iconic closing rides, but I'd like to point out let's not stick to a small sample. I see him give good rides to many types on several days. He's better on the turf than on dirt; but I think he's really good in Stakes, so I can't disclude him. One final thing, why the disregard to Rafael? That guy really can ride on a daily basis, he recently picked up win #3,000, he can ride turf and dirt, he is good in stakes, he can ride front runners, and he can ride closers. He's a real consistent jock. Good that you know Franco, he never gets the respect he deserves. He wouldn't fit Santa Anita dirt (maybe turf), which would seem most logical. But, I think he'd really do well if he based himself in Kentucky (once they decide he is ready for the big tracks) at Keeneland and Churchill. · 3 hours ago ·

Bashing Smith for his Breeder's Cup Classic ride (which, IMO, wasn't that bad).. A lot of people (not you, just in general) do that. They reall need more data and sample to base their opinions off of. Gary is a great rider, and was the top for a extended period of time in his original career, but I just can't stress that his winning percentage is very low; so I can't put him in my Top 5. He cares an enormous amount the sport, and has a genuine affection for the horses he works with. He may not always 'win' but it's not just a "job" for him, and for that reason I put him about a lot of others. I like RB< I really do, I just wouldn't classify him as a favorite- as I said I have other throw backs, and local favorites - I respect every thing he has done, he has worked hard, to make something a personal favorite you have to feel a personal attraction etc. and I just am not quite that high on RB. · 3 hours ago ·

I remember standing near where the horses come out at Belmont one day. Cordero was riding and many of the people near me booed him because of a ride in the prior race. I haven't seen many of his Betfair Hollywood Park rides recently, but he was really on a slump at Santa Anita meet and early BHP. As for him as a person. I really don't know Nakatani very well. I'd argue that there are many good hearted jockeys. Johnny V and Mike Smith (those are two I have met) are very personable. Corey Lanerie, the last I met, is also very personable and good-hearted. Out of what I can tell, Rafi, Joel, Krigger, Mario, etc are all very nice as well. Buckpasser. I do think good jocks will get the job done, but some people don't understand, every jock will give a bad ride, even the best. Does Kobe Bryant ever have a bad shooting night? Did Sandy Koufax ever have a bad outing? As for Joel, I always felt people automatically blamed him for the Gulfstream Turf 'Cap, but I did studies (which was influenced by icyhotboo's comments on the subject) and Animal Kingdom made that early move repeatedly, it just look strange because it was a slow pace. I also did studies today on Orb's pace parameters, and he also made that early move consistently. Joel could be blamed for placing him on the rail, but many people are a bit quick to bash the jock. buckpasser · Sword. I think Rosario should have taken Orb to the outside as soon as he could. The horse runs the best there. I am surprised that Shug and Rosario didnt come up with a plan when it was clear from the tactics that were discussed that everyone was going to try and box Orb in. Which is exactly what happened. I think Rosario himself is not as comfortable inside riding either. He needs to be more aggressive there. It almost seems as if both Shug and Rosario were surprised when Titleton Five didn't go to the lead and Stevens had it all his way. I think Orb made a lot of ground and was coming at the end when he got clear. While Joel gave him a wonderful ride in the Derby, I don't think JV could have done better. But in the Preakness, I don't think JV would have made the mistake of keeping Orb inside that Rosario did. Just my opinion. · 1 hour ago ·

78 years and he is still the only horse to win the Santa Anita Handicap as a three year old. Beating Seabiscuit, Pompoon, Top Row, Ligaroti, Gosum, and Sceneshifter was something, and then doing it in track record time... The 30lb weight impost probably helped a little bit.

Racing inside on the rail is not his thing, but I'm not so sure that was all of it. I knew he was done on the backstretch. When he made that small move, I just shook my head because I knew he wasn't going anywhere. As far as Oxbow, I am so surprised that he got away with it. The fact that no one challenged him at any point in the race tells me that I think most of the jockey's were more concerned with Orb. I'm not trying to take anything away from Oxbow or Gary Stevens. For everyone who is in love with Rosario, this ride, but more importantly his lack of preparation, just proves he still has some learning to do to become an "elite" jockey. IF he had done his homework (i.e. just pay attention to the races throughout the day), he would have known that the RAIL WAS DEAD! Stevens obviously knew since he rode the 3-path the entire way around the track on a lone lead. That's why he is a HOF rider. Also, did anyone notice that Orb's best running came when Rosario finally took him to the middle of the track? BTW - Orb was never stuck along the rail. Look at the break, even Krigger immediate moved to the outisde, when many said, "Krigger will pinch Orb on the rail to make sure he doesn't get outisde."Krigger's ride was better than Rosario's, only problem, Krigger didn't have the horse. · 13 hours ago ·

annmatt · Rosario is a top class jockey, no question, but he is human, and he clearly made a mistake in staying on the inside. With only 9 horses in the field, plenty of opportunities to get out from the rail. He had run the races that day and he knew the best spot was not the inside, yet he chose to stay on the rail. Only he knows why he defied everything we know about Orb's racing style. The role of the jockey is to place your horse in his comfort zone so he can run his race. The racing charts are available for all of Orb's races, and never has he won from the inside. He has always made his move from the outside, circling horses from 3-6 wide. Joel should have trusted his horse to be able to do that. Yes, the pace was slow, but nothing Orb hadn't overcome before. In the Fountain of Youth, he drew the rail, and Johnny V guided him away from the rail, making his move on the back stretch, and coming home circling horses. · 7 hours ago ·
