rafirox · Cocoa. Personally, I think winning the Derby has a lot to do with correct style, staying out of traffic and getting the distance. Revolutionary's Withers win was either a sign he can get out of traffic, or he is traffic prone. I think he got in bad traffic with a small field, imagine with 19 other horses. Also, he breaks slow. That is never a good attribute in the Derby. That coulf be fixed with some horses, but Todd Pletcher says it is his personality "laziness" On top of that, the Withers field was weak, and hasn't come back to do much. I think Revolutionary is a good race horse, but he ain't good for the DERBY, imo. @Dressage... I don't see how people could make fun of me for this one. Some people are saying Palace Malice has no chance... I won't bet him if he doesn't mature from here to the derby... But, he was very green in the LA Derby, against some good colts (#3 Code West, #13 Oxbow), and testing a route distance for the first time. He dropped furtherr back than normal (EXPERIENCE), and got caught behind a wall of horse (EXPERIENCE)... He's got the pedigree to go far. IF he matures, he is one to watch. How could one make fun of me? The Derby winner usually under the radar. I'll Have Another (15-1), Animal Kingdom (20-1), Super Saver (9-1), Mine That Bird (50-1). Its a list of the top 12 16 however many you do, on who is the best. You make these list to rank who is the best 3 year olds pointing to the Kentucky derby and as we get closer to the Derby the list should include any horse who qualified with enough points so far cause they have done enough to get in based on wins and points. And this new point system is gonna let everyone know who is the best 3 year old "NOW WHO WILL MAKE THE KENTUCKY DERBY STARTING GATE" not who is the ebst by the end of the year. rafirox · @Dressage: I know! I remember watching his maiden win (I was at the track for the Whitney and West Virginia Derby on 8/4/12, and he was running) I loved what I saw. I don't have a watch list that early (I make start evaluating performance in January) but I immediately took note of him. The reason I like him is not for what he has accomplished, but what I believe he has the potential too. He's facing some tough colts in the LA Derby (Code West #3, Departing #5, Oxbow #13, Revolutionary) so he's in for a tough task. All I know is this certainly green colt from Curlin has all the appropriate attributes to contest in the derby. If he doesn't mature in time, I won't bet him but he has a bright future. · 85 days ago ·

winwinwin · Here is what I think : The bell rings and the gate opens and all of this can happen next . The very best horse in the race can refuse to leave the gate . The very best jockey can break their knee if their horse moves to either side leaving the chute. Any horse can step in a small hole caused by a previous race and break an ankle. The saddle of any horse may slip unseating the rider. Any jockey can drop their whip at any time and not finish. Then there is a lot of bumping , trapping , clipping heels, mud flying, bits moving as well as any horse tiring at any given time during that Mile and a half . goblin · Since this "story" first began, before the Derby, I have thought the extreme overage found in only one of the horses could well have been an attempt at sabotage, as Rodriguez and the owners claim. Slight overages of a routinely used med, such as Banamine, could be occurring due to a miscalculation of clearance time(s). Perhaps the trainer and vets need to strongly confer on the pharmacokinetics and allow a longer interval for clearance before racing. I'm sure he's trying to follow the vets' advice/instructions (as is stated in the article) but it may be that a very slight adjustment would be helpful. I think it's nonsensical that Rodriguez is doing something nefarious, especially with a med like Banamine. · 38 days ago ·

AndyScoggin · I, too, have been tussling with how to use Vyjack. He has never been a horse that has dazzled in the morning. He is a horse that has benefitted from having his trainer as his exercise rider with each work being a teacher-student session. I think he is a mature horse and I like him, as you know all should know. What kind of a longshot do you see, Brian? 15-1 or higher? I'll use him in a trifecta play. Lisa111 · Great article. I have thought so highly of this horse since his maiden and he has always impressed. Vyjack will be spread out from top to bottom in my supers. It is easy to see that two different Vyjacks ran the Gotham and the Wood. In the Gotham, that was the 100% fit, what you see is what you get horse. In the Wood, his heart was still there but he was not 100%. Vyjack is the best "longshot" of the field and there is no way I would leave that one out. · 50 days ago ·

DerekFisher · I've loved Vyjack from the start, and i confidently feel the ONLY shot he has to win the derby is if he sits back and tries the one-shot from the clouds closing style that he displayed in the Gotham. I know he is versatile and can stalk the pace, but I just don't feel he can hang with some of the top horses using that style, unless his lung infection seriously impacted his wood performance, but i doubt that. · 50 days ago ·

patrick.l.mccaslin · Sorry but, two races back when he won the only horse he beat of any worth was overanalyze in a slow fraction race. Then in the wood he wad a chance to win but was turned back by Verrazano and passed by NI at the finish in another slow fraction race. I know it was said that he had infection the previous race is to why did not run as good. I don't buy that as if he did have a medical issue last race, why did they run him. Points right! I know how important it is getting to the KD but running a horse when he was sick would make it tougher in immediate races down the road, like the KD. Personally I don't think he is as good as many others in the KD anyway. Pitch! · 49 days ago ·

The only benefit to this is the 20 horse field that along with the extra distance helps the fan/bettor get a better price somewhere else and still have a chance.Current odds are Verrazano 4/1, Orb 5/1, Normady Invasion 10/1, Goldencents 10/1, Itsmyluckyday 12/1, etc. This is the first time that individual horses have been the betting favorite over the field taken as a whole.That may change, but not yet. · 48 days ago ·
