Marjorie Cowan, who raced homebred Breeders’ Cup winners Hollywood Wildcat and War Chant with her husband, Irving, died Feb. 17, 2009 at her Hollywood, Fla., home. Her family owned the prominent Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood from the 1960s though the 1980s. She was 68.

Hollywood Wildcat was voted 1993 champion 3-year-old filly after winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) over champion Paseana. The Distaff triumph was her fifth consecutive stakes win that year.

Hollywood Wildcat also was a grade I winner at 4 and retired with earnings of $1.4 million.

War Chant, who was out of Hollywood Wildcat, won the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) and two other graded stakes that year. He stands at stud at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky.

The Cowans campaigned several other homebred graded stakes winners, including multiple grade I winner Society Selection.

Marjorie Cowan was the founder of the Hattie Friedland School for the Deaf in Jerusalem in memory of her mother. This school was one of the first of its kind, welcoming both Jews and Arabs. She and her husband were instrumental in founding Mount Sinai Medical Center. The lobby is dedicated in their names. They were major contributors to the University of Miami medical programs, including the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
