continued throughout as its senior executive and guided the growth and development
of the business as a leading western Canadian producer of shelter products with 450
employees and annual sales of $140 million. The company became a publicly-held,
multi-faceted industrial enterprise with a variety of business interests, most importantly
in high-ended residential construction, land development and other shelter-related
activities. Sold the business to new owners in 2006.

His colleagues described him as “a driving force in the manufactured housing
industry”. His responsibilities with the Manufactured Housing Association included
overseeing its operation, ensuring the objectives of enhancing the image of the
Association were met and he served as liaison between the Association, industry and
government. He also was a member of the Housing Advisory Council.

Dom-Kan-Metalplast Inc. in Poland
1993 – 1996
Winalta started up a new Polish manufactured housing plant under the name
“Dom-Kan-Metalplast Inc.” It was a joint venture between Winalta and Metalplast
of Oborniki, Poland, a well-established manufacturer of metal/PVC industrial and
commercial buildings. The company employed more than 1,000 people and generated
annual sales exceeding $50 million. The new manufactured housing plant expected to
reach 500 homes production annually by 1997. The raw material required to manufacture the homes were sourced in Canada. Jim Sapara engineered the layout of the plant and started a training program for the supervisors of Dom-Kan. The operation employed approximately 150 people in Poland and created further employment in Winalta and indirectly through exporting Canadian made products. The homes ranged primarily from 83-167 sq. m. and included Canadian products such as vinyl exterior sidings, fiberglass insulation, carpet and lino floor coverings and gypsum wall board. Metalplant had an extensive existing distribution network which enabled Dom-Kan to export manufactured homes throughout Europe from the Oborniki plant.
