Don't be fooled by his sire Discreet Cat who in his first attemt at a route failed because of a throat abcess but keep in mind he also failed after that in sprints so it was the illness not the distance. He is bottom heavy with stamina where he should be. Sure he had a nice trip but he looks to be a good one, give him a chance. BTW: Why not limit the fieldto 18 or 19 horses, whatever it takes to not have the #1 horse running straight at the rail, half of the KD starters don't belong. · 2 days ago ·

DeadHeat · I think SC can stretch that speed over a mile, but I think a longer distances, even if he wants to lead, he needs to learn to rate on the lead. The only horses that were not burned in the BCJS were SC himself and Shumoos, only because that one was soooo far off the pace. SC is very very talented. I honestly think he could do a 22 opening quarter and get away with it at 9f. But he needs to prove he can relax in order to get 10f. · 34 days ago ·

ajump08 · This race is going to be all about Secret Circle, from start to finish. The two turn mile over the lightening fast surface will probably be an easier trip than the six furlongs over the very tiring track at Churchill Breeders' Cup day. I actually think Out of Bounds will be better with even more distance, dam won Breeders' Cup Distaff and Discreet Cat pulled of the UAE Derby going 9.5 furlongs. Hierro is a real talent, and is probably more ready to run than Out of Bounds who the connections will be taking their time with. · 34 days ago ·

However, it sounds like if he does well here he'll ship out, probably to Oaklawn like Baffert did with Lucky and Convayence and The Factor. icyhotboo · Going to take an extraordinary race by any horse to beat this colt. He still had gas in the tank at CD and could have gone around again without trouble. I love horses out of Dixieland Band Mares even as a great grand sire let alone sired. Going the half in 44 2/5 and still being able to handle schmoos says a lot. Looking for the tri and super here. I still have to look at the form just going from memory so far. #3-#2 look like 2nd, 3rd choice but I'm going to hit the ALL buttom here somewhere in the rear as randomness appears more frequently there. · 34 days ago ·

GreatSOB · Yea, it looks like Secret Circle didn't use his speed earlier enough. I thought he'd jump out and be the pace setter and then just hope not to run out of gas down the back. If he learns to relax on the lead or rate just off it he should come back strong. Comma to the Top looks like he could have distance limitations but maybe he just needed to get a race under his belt. Nice to see Colonel John returning to action in the Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar. He is probably using the flat mile restricted turf event as a prep for races such as the Pacific Classic.

My 2008 Kentucky Derby top Colonel John gave me a bit of redemption in Travers. Was an okay 6th of 11 in 2008 BC Classic. Pulled a muscle after disappointing 4th in Malibu, and he was forced to miss Strub Stakes. Came down with temperature and scratched out of the Big Cap.

Colonel John's younger brother took 5 starts to graduate. $200k Keeneland sales grad did not seem to care for Hollywood Park surface in 2008. Followed up visually impressive flat mile Pro-Ride maiden win with rallying show finish (strong gallop-out) in Sham Stakes (G3).
