cocoa2 · Even more important to remember is that the tracks with synthetics (Arlington Park, Betfair Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Golden Gate Fields, Keeneland, Presque Isle Downs, Turfway Park, Woodbine) all get top class horses and trainers, with the exception of Presque Isle Downs and Golden Gate Fields. If all tracks converted to synthetics I would bet that the national rate would be more like 2/1000 · 75 days ago ·

Sysonby · If you go to the Equine Injury database, they break the stats out by track. Santa Anita clearly shows a lower rate of catastrophic injury when they had the synthetic track, compared to dirt. All other factors were the same, only the track was different. So I like you cocoa2, but I'm not buying your argument. · 75 days ago ·

rafirox · I don't know. I didn't read the article but.... There wasn't artificial back in the day.... Horses didn't break down... And it was TURF or DIRT. I'm not buying it. Maybe synthetics are safer, as the study shows, but horses have been competitevly running on dirt much longer than synthetcs, and NOW the argument rises? If horses were healthy and sound, dirt wouldn't have more break downs. I agree with cocoa, dirt is more commmon, more break downs. I'm not buying this at all. In fact, to be honest, I have never cared for synthetics. Besides Arlington and Woodbine I don't care muh for those surfaces. · 75 days ago ·

Dressage3295 · cocoa- I think they are doing it by percentage, not from the actual number. Personally, I too believe synthetics and turf are better for the horse. Think about it a little bit. Running on natural dirt is a bit harder on your bones than turf or synthetic ground. However, I don't think synthetic/turf is THAT much better than dirt. After watching the race replays (spectacular races!), I eventually read the Sept. 21st NY Times and this sensationalized article--even those who TAKE CARE of our equine athletes, veterinarians, not immune to those "reporters" warped view of the horse racing industry. The headline: "Racing Economics Collide With Veterinarians’ Oath Horse-racing veterinarians are both doctor and drugstore; the more drugs they prescribe, the more money they make" sounds slanderous. Mary Z. · Re-post, from me: The words of Dr.Ferraro were saddening, in a way. He has his regrets. The public perception is that most horses are drugged when racing and that needs to change . Disallowing any drugs may be impossible or years away though. This article seems to have presented the different sides of the issue. Something to think about--should horses be treated with painkillers and anti-inflammation drugs to keep them in training? The article is also about the huge vet fees paid by owners that have asked that these pain killers to be used on their horses. Maybe the owners need to be more directly involved, but then, they should be able to rely on the trainers to abide by their wishes. And should a horse receiving 34 doses of drugs for pain, swelling,soreness in 3 months(Princess Haya) be racing? Huge amounts of money involved, so it won't end easily. · 239 days ago ·

My daughter is a competitive athlete, and she takes anti-inflammatories (ibuprophen) to keep racing. Mary Z. · I couldn't compare anti-inflammation drugs used by humans and horses directly since the horses don't choose the drugs, and the humans aren't carrying anyone on their backs and if they fall usually there won't be a pile up , not that it couldn't happen, plus not as many wagers are placed on the human runners to my knowledge. Another thing is, when humans break bones in their legs, most times they aren't euthanized. Of course I agree with you if you want to see a National Commissioner of Thoroughbred Horse Racing. · 239 days ago ·

Buckpasser · I don't know if anyone is aware but another horse broke down in New York yesterday and instead of euthanizing the horse, they put a splint on the leg and took him back in the van only to euthanize him later. The racing writer for the NYPost theorized that they did this because they did not want to do it in full view of the grandstand and because the horse had been claimed and the claim is no good if the horse dies on the track. So I guess Steve Crist is right that the NYTimes skewered the analysis by showing Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. AmbitiousD · Heather, very good article. I went and read the paper by Ms Bennett, and it proved very interesting. My assumption was "preconditioning" horses would remodel the bones to be stronger, but rather it just reallocates bone mass resulting in locally weaker areas as a whole.
