The colt should be named in Mr.Jackson's honor. I was thinking Jess' Dream, but your name choice, Jackson's Pride is very fitting.

Great article...I too was hoping he would take Curlin coat but today picture reveal that he is in the middle. He didn't take RA or Curlin color, he seems to be in the middle. Maybe they can call him Jackson's Star.

You have voiced exactly what this horse means to so many of us. Jackson's Pride, or as Barbara Banke refers to him, Jess' Dream, either name is fitting.

We may have to wait a while, but i'm so looking forward to watching him grow, to see who then takes after. So far it looks like he does have a lot of both parents in him.

Not in the least, merely saying that when one developes such a mindset, it's hard to just consider that he is just another foal. He's mortal. When you strip it down, he is just an exceedingly adorable newborn foal, who would melt the coldest heart in a matter of seconds.

Hierro Ready for Sham Stakes Assignment
Hierro, a highly regarded son of Hard Spun who is scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in Saturday’s Grade III Sham Stakes at one mile, worked four furlongs on Santa Anita’s fast main track Sunday in 47.60, breezing, for trainer Steve Asmussen. Hierro, owned by Stonestreet Stables, broke his maide...

The Sham isn't the best illustration of focusing on horses with workouts close to the race, but the top 3 finishers had workouts within 4-5 days of Jan. 7th. Anything past 5 days, there could be a question if today's race is a workout instead of a all out drive. Listen to the call on Hierro. He makes his move early (merely prepping the horse) then breezes home. His last workout was 6 days before the Sham. Hierro needs graded warnings for the Derby. So look for a workout within 2-5 days before a big graded event.

People seem to forget that Hansen did not have it easy that day at all. Not many horses went w2w on that track and he did. UR was wide, but in the clear the entire time, was in great striking distance as they came into the stretch and still could not get Hansen. Hansen was taking a big class hike, running on dirt for the first time, and was running against a bias. UR was wide, but it wasn't like he was dead last trying to make up 15 plus lengths. Hansen showed the most improvement from start to start and beat his rival on the square. UR is a very talented horse, but this should not be close. Hansen should get it.

I still don't know why there's a debate for 2-year-old champ. Hansen did nothing wrong, he remained perfect and he beat the best horses. Everyone's arguement is that Union Rags should have won & had a bad trip. But clearly he didn't win. He hasn't even won around 2 turns yet..........ridiculous. UR might be the better horse next year, but not in 2011.

Ruhlman the argument is that Union Rags raced in 3 graded stakes winning a g1 & g2 and 2nd in a g1 compared to Hansen's one not Union Rags having a bad trip and finishing 2nd.

@ travel: It can very well happen. Just because you don't see it that often, doesn't mean it wont. The debate for HOY is so wide open, nobody can be sure who will win especially if the Clark is won by a longshot.

Remembering ... Kensei
“Rest in Peace, Kensei.” I saw those words last week on Facebook, and my heart just sank. Kensei had been a horse that I watched and admired for the better part of four seasons, and in the time that it took me to read four simple words, I knew he was gone. Kensei was a five-year-old son of Mr. Greel...

Does anyone know if Mr. Asmussen paid homage to a horse that ran his heart out for him? I can't recall seeing even a single word. I know that this is a business and that many unknown horses suffer similar fates without any kind of acknowledgement but at least people knew Kensei and his accomplishments and I find it sad that he passed so tragically without even a word.

Relive the Summer of 2009 With Rachel Alexandra

We the lucky few...so far. :) Great article, Scott! My visit in March played out much as yours did with the exception that we had much cooler weather! Contrary to all the stories of how much of a "handfull" she was in training, she's exactly the opposite. I think farm life away from the stresses of the track really agree with her. The people at Stonestreet Farms couldn't have been more gracious! It's very clear to see Rachel is just what the staff calls her, the Queen of Stonestreet.

I feel honored to have witnessed their careers!

Lovely story. I went in March and it was one of the nicest experiences I have ever had. Hi Angela - I really enjoyed your blog! I was there for the 9:00 a.m. slot on Tuesday. I started crying as soon as we pulled up and I saw her. Our group was incredibly quiet; very respectful and subdued. When we all had to leave there were more tears (even the men!). Rachel is absolutely beautiful! The Stonestreet staff were amazing and so welcoming; I can't thank them enough. Won't we be reflecting about this day for the rest of our lives?

Terry, according to one of the workers I spoke to Stonestreet has always been a pretty private farm, however they do announce these Meet Rachel Days periodically. My best guess would be that they will announce another for the fall. They fill very fast, usually the first day they are announced. There is a way to get the announcement, I received my announcement from stonestreet and Rachel Alexandra on facebook.

http://afleetalexforever.blogspot.com/2011/04/statement-on-passing-of-jess-jackson.html Rest In Peace Mr. Jess Jackson: My sincerest condolences go out to Barbara Banke, the rest of the Jackson family, friends and employees of this great man. From the very beginning Mr. Jackson was a throwback to the old school owners that said: “My horse is faster than yours”. The confidence he showed in campaigning his charges to be a champion race horse no matter the gender is something that will never be forgotten and will go down in Horse Racing lore. Imagine a filly taking on males 3 times during the sophomore season. Imagine an owner allowing the fans to vote on the next start for his horse, imagine the owner of a Horse Of the Year bringing the horse back for another year. These things are unfounded, but the norm for such an ambitious, courageous man, who by means of his stature brought fans back to the game like we’ve never seen before. As a horse racing fan, and as a human being, I am very saddened to hear of Mr. Jackson’s passing. And more importantly as a family man, prayers go out to his family due to grieving his passing. You’re sportsmanship and ambitiousness will be sorely missed Mr. Jackson. Rest In Peace.

There are several great match-ups we could have seen over the years, like Curlin vs Big Brown in the 2008 BC Classic, Barbaro vs Invasor, Ghostzapper vs Afleet Alex, Funny Cide vs Empire Maker in the 2003 Travers. It's bad enough that we haven't had a Triple Crown winner in the last 32 years, but can we at least have an outstanding head-to-head rivalry?

Agree. They should have let her finish out the year. The problem was the Beldame was coming up tough, so there was nowhere to duck and they didn't want to see her run sixth. That's sort of chicken-shit, as she might have run a great race and surprised everyone.

A sad and confusing day. I don't understand why a horse that is prepping & runs a bullet one day is retired the very next. Perhaps they scoped her after the workout and something was wrong but I doubt we'll ever know. Regardless of whether you cheered for her or not there are two things that one can never take away from her: 1. She put together one of the greatest 3 year old campaigns for a filly in the history of racing & 2. She was wonderful for the sport. She & Zenyatta have been wildly popular & have brought a ton of needed interest & attention to a sport that we all here obviously love, but is clearly struggling. I can only hope that in a few months when they are both gone that 2 more horses can emerge that can garner half the interest that these two did.

Rachel had a fantastic 2009 season. But that 2009 season is why she's in retirement today. In near shame from the physical toll she paid in 2010 for that 2009 season. Gross mismanagement from Jess Jackson and Steve Asmussen. No other way to say it. The point was made in the 2009 Preakness that Rachel was talented enough to beat males. She wasn't a big, behemoth mare like Zenyatta. She was an average size, 3yr.old filly. Who still had a lot of growing, filling out, and maturing to do. But instead, she was ran completely into the ground in 2009. Jackson has taken what could've been one of American racing's all time great fillies. And has now left her with the legacy, because of that gross mismanagement, of being forever remembered now as simply a "one year wonder." I personally think this retirement is a race or two overdue. I wish this talented filly, who had the misfortune of getting involved with Jess Jackson, good things in the breeding shed.

Was RA's 2009 campaign to taxing on her. Who really knows. In hindsight i guess she could have skipped the Woodward, in that most agree that was the race that took the most out of her. Then again if she never competed those races we wouldn't be talking about her today. The reason that she was Horse of the Year was that she ran a number of races out of her element and competed in races where the outcome wasn't ensured. In her races against the boys she ran hard every step of the way and the splits were more then honest. There was absolutely no other horse in training male or female who came close to her accomplishments in 2009. In closing I must respond to Bband, the b must stand for befuddled, your comment must be surley coming from sore loser as RA never ducked anyone and that I challenge you or anyother person to name any other filly who could outshine her.

Rachel Fit and Ready
Rachel Alexandra “should win” the April 30 La Troienne Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, according to her principal owner, Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables. But if the 2009 Horse of the Year doesn’t make it to the wire first, it won’t be a catastrophe, Jackson said on the eve of the race, “bec...

What was the big shock. RA missed a long work. Worked horrible 3 back and raced on a tiring track. She was a false favorite if there ever was. Besides, she isn't the true horse of the year and she's a miler. lol

False favorite? Hardly. But a vulnerable favorite? For sure. False favorites are horses who shouldn't even be the favorite. Ultimately, that wasn't the Rachel we saw last year.

I would like to see Rachel-Zenyatta meet when both are peaking. Zen is grooving and Rachel is not all the way back. At this point in the year the Apple Blossom would be a mismatch.

Being able to race in November but also have virtually no break in the action gives Zenyatta a huge edge. Rachel has been off since September with a rushed schedule. Makes a big difference.

I don't think we will see RA at the AB. Even an 85% RA should have been what she was up against yesterday based on how she ran in 09. I think the best campaign won HOY in 09 not the best horse and now RA is paying for it. I am a Zenyatta fan, I just think what RA accomplished last year was great but she may never be the same horse again. I want RA and Z to match up when they feel RA is 100%. With Z yesterday, she go into traffic had to duck to the inside and still won going away and Mike never had to use the whip. Go Zenyatta!

That would be awesome. If that's the case, the matchup would happen as both would have nothing to lose. Rachel would have her Horse of the Year award, and Zenyatta would have her perfect 14 in a row, eclipsing Personal Ensign's record. At that point I think both camps would go for it...
