The super screener was way off. When I saw they had carpe diem and not American pharaoh in their top likely to win category, no way I could trust following their betting strategy. uh I don't think it was hard to see carpe diem had almost no shot with his poor speed figs and post position.
Watch out for Materiality later on. He did extremely well given the circumstances. He broke terribly, lost a shoe, got dirt kicked in his face for the first time, was almost last coming around the final turn, and he still closed to get 6th as a usual frontrunner.
  • travel_vic · When this one gets some seasoning under his belt, yes, he may turn out to be an effective 3 y/o · 12 hours ago
  • myjumper21 · It's really unfortunate that he doesn't have much experience. He's very talented, but he was immature enough as it is going into the derby and then additionally getting post 3.. incredible that he was good enough to get 6th. · 10 minutes ago
I think people missed Calvin more than they missed El Kabeir in the Derby.
What would a $50 dollar Kentucky Derby ticket be worth if they had the #18 on top, with #8, #10 on bottom?
7th place finisher Keen Ice came out of the Kentucky Derby in good shape. Donegal Racing confirms via twitter that Keen Ice will skip the Preakness and point for the Belmont Stakes in 5 weeks.
I think they should point him towards the Woody Stephens at 7 furlongs or the Dwyer at a mile. Then the Jim dandy to the Travers. To jump him from a mile to a mile and a half would be bad for his long term success. That's just my opinion.
DRF is writing AP had the perfect trip ( of course the article is locked so I can only read the first paragraph). I thought he ran a good but not great race while others are wow'd by his performance. So a few differing views out there. Should at least make the Preakness exciting.
The old man of French racing, Cirrus Des Aigles, scores his 3rd career win in the G1 Prix Ganay beating Al Kazeem in 2nd by 1-3/4 lengths.
Trainer Bob Baffert said May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner American Pharoah and third-place finisher Dortmund would both run back in the May 16 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico Race Course. And with trainer Simon Callaghan also committing Derby second-place finisher Firing Line to the 1 3/16-mile Preakness, it would be another showdown among the Derby top three."As of right now, I don't see why not," Baffert told a media horde at Churchill Downs after showing off his Derby winner. He said Zayat Stables, which owns American Pharoah, and Dortmund's owner, Kaleem Shah, deserve the opportunity. "We'll see how they train next week." Article on Bloodhorse
Forget about the hate on Victor, he rode a decent race. What should really concern AP fans is how average this Derby was. Slow early, middle and late fractions on a track playing pretty fast. The top 3 crawled home in almost 27 seconds and the track wasn't that slow. AP looks like he wants no part at all of 1 1/2. No TC this year. Stop the hype machine. :-)
  • California Dragon via Disqus · He never was in a fight before and Firing Line is a Warrior in the home stretch. Both battled well but American Pharoah was the better one. I don't know if there's a chance for Triple Crown victory for AP but he proves that he can go to front and walk without any challengers but he can fight as well for the lead, going a little bit back but than come back to win. I really love this creature. · 8 hours ago
  • Ricky via Disqus · I won't say he can't do it. But if he stays out wide the whole time at Belmont I think he will lose · 1 hour ago
Belmont? Yeah right. If American pharoah does make it to the Belmont unscathed and Competitive Edge did enter, he would simply be nothing more than a rabbit for American Pharoah.
11th place finisher Frammento came out of the Kentucky Derby in good shape. Nick Zito tells DRF's Marty McGee that he will ship to Belmont mid-week and will make his next start in the Belmont Stakes. According to DRF
It was exciting to watch The Derby! The three forerunners AP,FL and Dortmund purposefully set a low pace as low as they can get to avoid a suicidal pace with the result the horse with the best stamina ie American Pharoah won the race.It is amazing that this horse could win The Derby going as much wide as he did meaning that this horse is at least 6 lengths better than Firing Lane and Dortmund if he could have saved his trip.Victor knew that he had the horse in spite of gong that wide. This horse is a monster,I wish him the best and wish to witness a Triple Crown winner in my life this time.God,please keep all these horses healthy, that is my only wish. NB:Frosted is the only horse who could close from the rest of the pack from behind and almost beat Dortmund for the third place.

Able Friend has done it again!! He wins the Champions Mile at Hong Kong with devastating ease. Now, this could set up a possible trip to Royal Ascot for the World's Highest ranked horse.
  • ILuvTurfRacing · @Jbyrnes1, According to a story on the front page of this morning's Racing Post.com web-site, Able Friend will in fact be prepared for a trip to Royal-Ascot next month to run in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes!! Can't wait to see if he's just as dominate racing in Europe, because clearly no horse in Hong Kong can beat him at 7f or a mile. · 1 hour ago
Where they gonna go with him? Do they wait until Belmont an try to play spoilers?
I guess ...but the track bias was super fast on dirt ...all the races were fast ...noone came from off the pace yesterday on the dirt
Justin Zayat via twitter confirms that Kentucky Derby winner American Phaorah came out of the race in good shape. There is no word yet on when he will ship to Baltimore. More details on that to come soon.
Trainer Rick Violette that Upstart, who was basically eased while running last in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, came out of the race in good shape and without any physical issues. "I can't see anything, other than taking a whole lot of dirt and not wanting to run into it," Violette said. "We'll go over him A to Z and see if we can find anything. Nothing we could find yesterday." Violette said Upstart would travel back to New York on Monday morning. Violette does not have any immediate plans for his next start. According to DRF
