Love his breeding lines, but unfortunately his running style won't bode well in the Derby. He likes to rate close up or just off the pace, but doesn't have the early foot to top AP or Dortmund so he'll be at least 3 wide or more on the first turn... Now of those two previously mentioned speedsters I've seen only Dortmund show the ability to dig in down the stretch once challenged, AP has yet to be challenged. I see Upstart finishing in the top 5-6 at the Derby but I'm afraid a minor award is his ceiling. With AP & Dortmund only having gotten 1 1/16 to date, I'm not sure they can hold the entire distance, but still only see true closers getting by them late rather than pace raters.
Trainer Kevin Ryan tells AtTheRaces.com that G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in Ireland on May 24th is the next likely target for The Grey Gatsby who finished 2nd in the G1 Dubai Turf over the weekend. Ryan said he'll use that race to prep for the G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal-Ascot in June. Also tentatively scheduled right now to be a part of the Tattersalls Gold Cup field is the Dermot Weld trained Free Eagle and the Aidan O'Brien trained Adelaide returning to Ireland from a stint racing in Australia.

Time means very little in the Kentucky Derby preps, I.E. - Materiality who ran a 1.52 for 1 1/8 and finished in a laggy 13 4/5 (generally speaking closing time is all I would care about heading into the Derby, but Gulfstream has been slow all season). I have Never bet on a foreign horse heading into the Derby, but if he trains well leading up to the race that MAY change this year. In year's past it has been close finishes or horses lacking any certain turn of foot that have won the UAE races. This year we have a horse who should be unbeaten on Dirt (broke dead last in UAE 2000 Guineas spotting the field open lengths and almost caught the winner Maftool), this same horse showed a definite acceleration heading into the final 2 poles. It looked like he sprouted wings at the top of the lane. Any other year I would be right there with the majority saying this horse is a toss, as that is what I have done with these UAE winners for years. This year is different. DeKock has been pointing for Kentucky since the Guineas and he knows he has a good horse on his hands. If he was a speed horse or dead closer I would write him off, but he's a garden-spot type, who should be fine wherever he is placed. Given the fact that the pace set-up will be much hotter in Kentucky I AGREE, he will not get the typical 24/25 fractions of UAE, but that's a different track with different dirt, so it's a different story. I'm not saying he'll win the race but he will definitely run well if given a fair trip. Final predictions are still 5 weeks away so I'm not getting ahead of myself. If there was ever a UAE winner who had a chance, it's this one. The US horses are the strongest they've looked in a long time (as a group) but there are still zero standouts, there are still 0 US horses who have showed me any certain turn of foot who have sat at least 3 off the pace. With all the hot speed this year, it may be the horses sitting just off the pace or those further back that will have a better chance. I do like Dortmund and he has lead my Derby list for 7 weeks, but I still have my doubts with him. He hasn't shown any acceleration down the lane, he's most certainly a grinder and those types generally don't have an easy-go in the Derby. I still need these final two weeks of preps before I get it all straightened away.
For those of you claiming track time difference look no further than Materiality. 1.52 and change, finished up in 13 4/5. Say he runs 14 in the Derby that puts him at 2.06.....this same horse just ran the best Beyer (110) for any 3 year old heading to Kentucky. I'm not even a big Beyer or Materiality fan, but lets face it - final time means next to nothing. Show me who they beat, and how they do it. Final time is little more than a statistic for Track Variant.

I think probably why they are passing there is to make sure frosted gets his points for the derby

Carpe Diem strictly one to beat but taking a long look at Tiz Shea D

like Far From Over if he makes it to post time for this one
  • jinlie01 · tough break for Far From Over and his connections. Wishing him a full recovery. With that being said, if Tiz Shea D runs here..I will take him in lieu of FFO. My pick in Blue Grass if he runs in that race instead. · 2 hours ago
So sad. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Watch out for Street Strategy. Won 2 allowances after long layoff and has not been set down yet. Works very fast for a Randy Morse horse. Field doesn't look real strong.
ANy word on OK, If he is healthy as they say why would they skip all the last 100 point preps? Arkansas derby is only one left and I don't see that happening, tough field
Only 6 horses entered for the Wood, that is sad. Most of them closers as well. This is Frosted's best chance to sneak into The Derby with some easy points if he ends up being the lone speed at Aqueduct... The only bright side to this is that if El Kabeir doesn't get exposed here as a middle distance horse and Frosted finds a backdoor into this field, that's 2 horses I get to toss for my exotics are Derby Day. That's a precious commodity in a 20 horse field.
