The Zenyatta camp held back from an all out commitment to run her in the G1 Clement L. Hirsch until she got a few "strolls around the Polytrack". I was at the barn today and the report is all systems go! The hesitation to commit stemmed from a concern about Zenyatta's affinity for the Polytrack surface. While clearly not her favorite racing surface, she did win the prior two editions of the Clement L. Hirsch and the field she faces this Saturday seems to be the weakest of the three. She got around the track very comfortably in her gallops and looks as magnificent as always. Stablemate Scenic Blast's game finish in last week's Bing Crosby only helped the cause. Zenyatta goes for 18 straight wins and her 12th Grade 1 victory.
Joe Talamo Joins Tyler Baze on the DL List
After seizing the lead early and taking it into the stretch aboard Rockstar Ben in Del Mar's 3rd Race on Thursday, Joe Talamo hit the turf surface full force as his charge went down and was subsequently euthanized. Joe Talamo sustained several fractures in his wrist and while no surgery is required he will be sidelined until opening day of the Oaktree meet at Santa Anita.
Western Mood Seeks Revenge in the G2 Best Pal Stakes
Arguably the two best 2 year-old colts from the Western Division will clash again in the G2 Best Pal Stakes on Sunday. JP's Gusto defeated Western Mood by a mere neck last out in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship Stakes on July 5th. This punter believes Western Mood will turn the tables this time around as they move to the Polytrack surface.
