Zenyatta marks her 18th victory, winning the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar Thorobred Club, Del Mar, CA

Three-time champion older female and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta will be bred to Bernardini, owners Jerry and Ann Moss said on Wednesday.

The Mosses announced the mating in a statement distributed by Lane’s End, where she is boarded in Versailles, Kentucky.

Bernardini sired Group 1 winner Biondetti, Grade 1 winner A.Z. Warrior, and two other stakes winners and ranked second on the freshman sire list by progeny earnings in 2010. He stands at Darley in Lexington, which also is the home of Zenyatta’s sire, Street Cry (Ire).

The Mosses did not elaborate on the decision in the statement.

What the Nation is saying about Zenyatta has date with Bernardini...

Bernardini is a fantastic choice to bread Zenyatta with, IMO. Bernardini is rapidly proving himself to be one of, if not the premier young sire in America. For awhile, I had been hearing it would likely be A.P.Indy that Zenyatta would be bread first to. But A.P.Indy is, after all, the sire of Bernardini. European owners are snatching up Bernardini bread foals like lightning. Two of Bernardini's very promising European juveniles raced at this year's Breeders Cup. The filly, Theysken's Theory. And the Godolphin owned colt, Biondetti. Biondetti also has the distinction of being the first G1 winner sired by Bernardini. Having won the G1 Premio Gran Criterium at San Siro, Italy back in the fall. John Gosden also trains an Andrew Lloyd Weber owned colt named Treasury Devil who was sired by Bernardini that Weber paid $1 million dollars for. He's also a very promising colt. Having already won 3 of 4 lifetime starts. I personally think the prospect of a Zenyatta-Bernardini bread foal could prove to be something very special. JMO.
