Zenyatta captures the 2010 Santa Margarita for a perfect 15 for 15 Zenyatta remained undefeated while taking her fifteenth consecutive victory in the Santa Margarita Stakes today at Santa Anita Park. It was not a simple walk in the park for Zenyatta though.

Less than a half hour after Rachel Alexandra was shocked in the New Orleans Ladies', Zenyatta looked like she may suffer a similar fate when she had absolutely nowhere to go at the top of the stretch. The champion's undefetaed streak looked in jeopardy as Mike Smith began shifting Zenyatta inside and outside, desperately searching for room, before finally bursting through at the rail at striking the lead just inside the 1/8 pole.

Dance To My Tune set the pace early, and the 51-1 shot was two lengths clear at the top of the stretch. Despite having everything her own way she just wasn't strong enough down the stretch to hold off Zenyatta who, despite Mike Smith's pre-race claims stating the champion may be closer to the pace than usual, settled into last early. Dance To My Tune did hold onto second by a nose over Floating Heart, who was also forwardly placed early. Striking Dancer rounded out the superfecta in front of Pretty Unusual, Made For Magic, Pretty Katherine, and Gripsholm Castle.

Zardana is owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. She covered the 1 1/8 mile distance of the Santa Margarita in 1:48.20

What the Nation is saying about Zenyatta Remains Undefeated in 'Margarita...

Obviously disappointed that Rachel is not going in the Apple Blossom, but better that she passes because she is clearly not up to the task at this stage. As for Zenyatta, the phrase Freak of Nature comes to mind.
With this mare it's not rocket science. Simply put, it's "NATURE." Zenyatta, given how big and physically strong she is makes it impossible for other fillies, colt's too, for that matter, to compensate for that devastating closing drive once she uncorks it. She really is just "TOO MUCH MARE" for Rachel Alexandra to hold off in the stretch once she unleashes that late run. Really, it's just hard to hold back or outrun a "runaway locomotive." As for Rachel Alexandra being pulled out of the 2010 Apple Blossom, that comes as no surprise to me. Jess Jackson, for weeks now, has been trying to "backpedal" on that decision. Every since he asked for the extra week to train, and received it, he's been trying to "save face." That's a week he never really thought that he would get. That's why he asked. Now, it's back to the "Oh, she's only about 85% excuse", which most people will buy, given her lost to Zardana yesterday. But the bottom line here is this. Anyone who's involved with racing, Jess Jackson included, knows that Zenyatta is the better of those two mares. Period. You've now got about as much chance of seeing Rachel Alexandra at Oaklawn in April, as there is of a blizzard hitting the Bahamas. The Rachel Alexandra camp want's no part of Zenyatta. They're just trying to "save face." "LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!"
