So the anti-Zenyatta folks are beating the drums in a new version of
the “Blame Game.” Quite simply, they say, she didn’t get it done for
Horse of the Year.
I don’t know that much about your game, but I have spent time on the
backside over the years getting to know trainers like Charlie
Wittingham, Sonny Hine, and Jimmy Jones, to name-drop a few. They were
all blessed with an indomitable spirit.
Whittingham had a great wit, Hine had great compassion and love for
his Skip Away and Jimmy Jones, well…I once did a television essay for
CBS News “Sunday Morning” on who was the greatest, Secretariat, the
people’s horse, or Jimmy Jones’ Citation. Jones, who was 92 at the
time, got right up on his toes, stuck his chin in my face and blurted,
“They got one opinion, I got another. If you run them 10 straight
Saturdays (against each other), go to a different track every time and
take the weather as it came, Citation would get the most of them.”
