Once again, the balmy green of an Indian summer Saturday at
Hawthorne Race Course proved most hospitable to a visitor from the east.
Favored
Yankee Fourtune — unbeaten in three turf starts at Saratoga and Belmont
this summer — broke well and never looked back en route to a 2
1/4-lengths victory in the Grade III Hawthorne Derby.
The victory
was the second major score in as many weeks from the traveling barn of
trainer Kiaran McLaughlin at the west suburban oval. The New York-based
saddler captured the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup eight days ago with
Redding Colliery, also in wire-to-wire style.
