Woodward Still "Plan A" for Paynter

Plan A” for Paynter, second in the San Diego Handicap in his second start of a remarkable comeback, is still the Woodward Stakes on August 31 at Saratoga, trainer Bob Baffert said Thursday morning.

But Baffert indicated that Paynter would be nominated, at a cost of $300, for the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic. Nomination deadline for Del Mar’s signature race is Thursday although a supplemental entry, at a cost of $10,000, can be made up to the time of entries on Wednesday, August 21.

Paynter worked six furlongs on Wednesday in 1:13.60.

“He went over the track the best he ever has here,” Baffert said.

Two Stakes Part Of 10-Race Card On Sunday

The $150,000 Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap and the $150,000 Solana Beach Handicap are the stakes features on a 10-race Sunday card.

The Rancho Bernardo, at 6 ½ furlongs for older fillies and mares, will go as the fourth race. The field, from the rail out is: Reneesgotzip (Garrett Gomez), Winding Way (Rafael Bejarano), Sugarinthemorning (Gary Stevens), Curvy Cat (Corey Nakatani) and Sweet Marini (Martin Garcia).

The Solana Beach will go as the eighth race. The field, from the rail out is: Unusual Hottie (Joe Talamo), Halo Dolly (Rafael Bejarano), Qiaona (Garrett Gomez), Heat Trap (Victor Espinoza), Bella Viaggia (Gary Stevens), Spring Bloom (Corey Nakatani) and Warren’s Flasher (Julien Leparoux).

Stevens Well Situated For Arlington Million Return

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will be in Chicago on Saturday for the Arlington Million Day card. It will be his first appearance in the event in 10 years, with the last one ending with a bizarre spill and major injuries.

In 2003, Stevens was in front and appeared set to record his third Million victory when his mount, Storming Home, bolted to the right, dropping Stevens in front of a hard-charging field. He was struck by one horse and came out of the incident with a collapsed lung and fractured vertebrae.

Stevens emerged from seven years of retirement this year and has 11 wins from 37  mounts at Del Mar.

Stevens’ mounts at Arlington on Saturday include Draw Two for trainer Michelle Nihei in the $500,000 Secretariat Stakes, (6-1 morning line) Marketing Mix for Tom Proctor in the $750,000 Beverly D. (2-1 favorite) and Indy Point (9-2) for Richard Mandella in the Arlington Million.

Older Comments about Woodward Still "Plan A" for Paynter...

Doubts that Paynter will run in the Pacific Classic. BB mentioned the horse had a dislike for the surface. Haven't been on here for awhile, just finding it interesting the heat Baffert is getting on other sites hasn't surfaced on HRN as much. Biased investigation?
I thought he could possibly survive his illness ordeal, but didn't think he should be stressed by competition again. Yet the reports from Baffert and the Zayats say he's happy and thriving. I think the BC Classic goal is pretty ambitious though. I'm still wary of the effects of the cumulative stress.
The idea that he is running at all
t_v, Are you referring to the possibility of Paynter being entered in the 1 1/4 mi. Pacific Classic?
They really want to kill this animal don't they?
Gary stevens on Marketing Mix....Heck ya!
