Morton Fink’s reigning Horse of the Year, Wise Dan, will face nine rivals Saturday as he goes for a repeat victory in the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1).

The Shadwell Turf Mile, a “Win and You’re In” race for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) to be run Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, is one of five stakes on Saturday’s 10-race program that begins at 1:05 p.m. (ET). The Shadwell Turf Mile will go as the afternoon’s ninth race with a 5:21 p.m. post time.

In addition to the Shadwell Turf Mile, two other Grade 1 races are scheduled Saturday: the $400,000 First Lady for fillies and mares going a mile on the turf and the 100th running of the $400,000 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity for 2-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles on the main track.

The First Lady is the afternoon’s seventh race with a 4:17 p.m. post time and is followed by the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity with a 4:49 p.m. post time.

A winner of nine consecutive races and a five-time graded stakes winner at Keeneland, Wise Dan has compiled a record of 18 wins in 25 starts and earnings of more than $5 million. Trained by Charlie LoPresti, Wise Dan has won 10 of 11 races on the grass.

John Velazquez has the riding assignment on Wise Dan, who will break from post position 10.

Chief among Wise Dan’s rivals are Silver Max and Summer Front.

Owned by Mark Bacon and Dana Wells, Silver Max has won his past two races in gate-to-wire fashion in the Oceanport (G3) at Monmouth and the Bernard Baruch (G2) at Saratoga. Trained by Dale Romans, Silver Max will break from post position nine and be ridden by Robby Albarado.

Waterford Stable’s Summer Front, trained by Christophe Clement, also has won his past two races. Summer Front won the Miami Mile Handicap (G3) at Calder in April and most recently won the Cliff Hanger (G3) at Monmouth. Joe Bravo has the mount Saturday and will break from post position five.

The field for the Shadwell Turf Mile, from the inside out, is as follows: Winning Prize (ARG) (Garrett Gomez), Turallure (Julien Leparoux), Skyring (Eddie Castro), Hogy (Joe Rocco Jr.), Summer Front (Bravo), Willcox Inn (James Graham), Handsome Mike (Mario Gutierrez), Coalport (Channing Hill), Silver Max (Albarado) and Wise Dan (Velazquez). All starters will carry 126 pounds.

Older Comments about Wise Dan Aims for Shadwell Turf Mile Repeat...

There have been a lot of 5 horse fields with a 2-5 favorite this year, but one horse that everyone seems to want to try and beat is Wise Dan. He always draws a pretty good size field, although he looks like much the best horse in here. It will be a tough race but I look for Wise Dan to repeat on his way to a second Breeders Cup Mile victory.
