Winchester Readies for Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Winchester, who will attempt to defend his title in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational on Super Saturday, turned in a five-furlong breeze toward that goal on Sunday morning at Belmont Park. Sent out in company with Mr. Ryder, Winchester was clocked in 1:03.56 over Belmont's firm inner turf course.

"It was a nice work, just a maintenance work," said Christophe Clement, who trains the 6-year-old son of Theatrical for Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone.

Winner of Saratoga's Grade 1 Sword Dancer on August 13 in his most recent outing, Winchester seeks the fifth Grade 1 score of his career in the Joe Hirsch.

Clement added that reigning Eclipse Champion Turf Male Gio Ponti, who worked five furlongs in 1:03.57 over the inner turf on Wednesday, would breeze next Sunday toward a planned start in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on October 8.

"Gio Ponti will work next weekend," Clement said. "He worked this Wednesday, so he will come back next Sunday on the turf."

What the Nation is saying about Winchester Readies for Joe Hirsch Turf Classic...

I expect Winchester to be as equally a formidable opponent for Cape Blanco over 1-1/2 as Gio Ponti was over 1-1/4 in the Man O' War and Arlington Million. That said, I still can't see past Cape Blanco winning a third straight American G1 turf stakes in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. Cape Blanco's a proven G1 winner at 1-1/2 himself in Europe. Where it's no secret that the middle distance turf competition is a good deal tougher than it is in America. JMO.
Winchester's gonna have his hand's full with Cape Blanco!! Cape Blanco's not just a 10f horse. He's got a win in the G1 Irish Derby over 12f, and a 2nd place finish behind Harbinger, but ahead of Youmzain, Daryakana, and Workforce in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 12f.
