Who Am I ???

Who Am I ???

 

*I was bred in the great state of Kentucky, but my sire's first language was French.

*A winner of 65% of my career races, I also finished in the money in 94% of them.

*I could only win once in my first six starts, but that victory did come in a stakes race at Saratoga.

*A member of an elite club, both my trainer and I are members of racing's Hall of Fame.

*I raced only on dirt, but I was a stakes winner at nine different distances.

*The only time I was not favored as a three-year-old was in the Belmont Stakes.

*I may not have been first, but I am still proud of my most special accomplishment.

*At the time of my retirement, I held the all-time record for career earnings.

*I was never beaten by more lengths than I was in the Travers Stakes.

*Besides being a stakes winner at four different racetracks in New York, I also won stakes in three other states.

*I was a star at stud as well; perhaps you've been to the namesake of my most famous son.

Nice! I was stuck on French speaking sires, and barking up the wrong Nureyev tree.
When I say star I usually look at Bull Lea, Fair Play, Bold Ruler, Alydar and Northern Dancer. Depends on how loose you are with words. I would have preferred "successful". Nice job, aheitner, you never seem to fail at these Who Am I???'s. I look forward to next week.

I thought the not being favored in the Belmont might throw people off the Triple Crown trail, but you were too smart for that. cocoa2, would you preferred I used the words excellent sire for the horse who sired a Horse of the Year, a Triple Crown winner, and a major winner in England among his many stakes winners?
Holding the record for career earnings led me to believe that it was an old timer. Then I took the chance that the "most special accomplishment" was a triple crown. And Sir Gallahad, the sire of Gallant Fox is from France. Unfortunately, I haven't been to Omaha yet!
