Who Am I ???

who am i ???

*Bred in the East, I was owned and bred by a member of the Hall of Fame.
*My sire looked like something very special before a career ending injury.
*I was a major stakes winner in each of my three seasons on the racetrack.
*My best son proved a chip off the old block by winning three of the same graded stakes that I won.
*I was a stakes winner at Churchill Downs, but my most important eight stakes victories came in New York.
*My great rival and I raced each other ten times and won championships in three consecutive years … I won't tell you who won more of each.
*I never won a Triple Crown race, but I did win a stakes race in between attempts in the series.
*Like my owner, my trainer has passed away and is a member of the Hall of Fame.
*In my greatest streak, I won four straight big races at Aqueduct, Saratoga, and Belmont ranging in distance from 9 furlongs to 1 ½ miles.
*As a stallion, I sired a couple of champions, although my best never won an Eclipse.
*Forget some city, you'd rather have me.
You should know by now … Who Am I ???

What the Nation is saying about Who Am I ???...

4 hours 'til post time!
I'll never get a Who Am I??? BUT! I do have a suggestion. After you have a winner, Can you post answers to all of the questions above? For example, I don't know what stakes race Key to the Mint won in between Triple Crown races. Even those of us who will never win Who Am I can learn in the aftermath. Thanks Brian!!!
  • annmatt · Ditto! I, too, try to go back and put the answers you give in the clues with the horse, but some are harder than others to find. For instance, I've exhausted my free services in trying to figure out who Key's greatest rival was. Would love to know who competed with him 10 times! I did figure out who his great son was -- Java Gold -- but his daughter, Jewel Princess won just as much money on the distaff side! These are really educational for me...I will never win one, but I enjoy the knowledge builder. · 853 days ago ·

  • BrianZipse · Ann, His great rival was Riva Ridge, who beat him 6 out of 10, and was Champion 2yo in 1971 and Champion older male in 1973. · 852 days ago ·

Fell asleep 90 minutes ago - subliminally fearing tonight's field. Who Am I-ing in bed with i Phone - shut eye might have cost me the score - Red Borden
congrats to skydime BTW SueHynes I was thinking Damascus too
Love Key to the Mint!
"The Keys" ... well done once again ... Ladies and gentleman, skydime doesn't play every week, but when he does, he is always one of the ones to beat!
"Never won a TC race but won a stakes in between tries" = Whichever 3yo race is run as a prep for the Belmont (either Withers or Peter Pan). That and the last clue were the keys.
Nice one, skydime!
So close, Matt ... How did you nail this one down, Chris?
skydime is back! You got it, Chris ... Key to the Mint, the 1972 Champion 3yo, is tonight's answer!
