Gio Ponti wins the Arlington Million There will be an embarrassment of riches Saturday at Keeneland, and that's forgetting for a moment the $4.3 million that Gio Ponti has amassed. It's more the cumulative sum of all the big-money horses, Gio Ponti included, who will be making their final starts before the Breeders' Cup.

The $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile, the richest race of the 17-day fall meet, will mark the jumping-off point for Gio Ponti as he makes his way to Louisville toward the Breeders' Cup. The Shadwell is one of five FallStars Weekend events, all of them graded, to be run on a blockbuster 11-race card Saturday. Standouts such as Proviso, already a three-time Grade 1 winner this year, and 2009 Breeders' Cup winners Informed Decision and California Flag also will race here Saturday.

For a marquee horse, however, it's hard to top Gio Ponti, a multiple Eclipse Award honoree who has filled a number of dramatic roles at the highest levels of American racing for much of his 21-race career. The 5-year-old Gio Ponti reeled off four straight Grade 1 wins last year, including the Arlington Million, and subsequently was second in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2010 Million. What the Nation is saying about Where Does Gio Ponti Go After Shadwell? ...

Duh? He wins, BC Mile. He falters... they make an excuse and try the Classic again.
Gio Ponti is kind of in a tough spot in this year's Breeders Cup races. Turf is definitely his best surface. But unfortunately for Gio Ponti, 10 furlongs has always been his best distance. The Breeders Cup event doesn't have a 10 furlong turf race for him to go to. He's always been vulnerable to defeat at 12 furlongs. With the likes of Workforce and Fame and Glory possibly headed to America from Europe for the Breeders Cup Turf. That race would difficult at best for Gio Ponti to try to win. He's won over a mile in his career on turf. In the Frank E. Kilroe Mile. But there again, he's never raced at a mile on turf against the kind of speed that will likely be coming from Europe for the Breeders Cup Mile-Turf. I think Gio Ponti may potentially be one of those rare horses that has the ability to race over turf, synthetics, and conventional dirt. I think he's at his best on turf. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Gio Ponti pop up and run well on conventional dirt. The same way he ran well on synthetics in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic. I don't think he can beat the Euro horses at 12 furlongs on turf, or the Euro horses at a mile on turf. If I was Gio Ponti's connections. I'd take my chances that he'll respond to conventional dirt. Knowing that 10 furlongs is his best trip. And hope for a big run out of him in the Breeders Cup Classic again. If not the Classic, then let him try the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. The competition level of the Dirt Mile will be much easier than the competition level of the turf mile. JMO.
