As expected, the final year-end handle numbers for U.S. racing were
pretty dismal. According to Equibase, people bet $1.35 billion less on
horse racing in this country in 2009 than they did in 2008, for a 9.88
percent decline. The Daily Racing Form reports that the $12.3 billion
wagered in 2009 was the lowest figure since 1996.
