Velazquez Breaks Collarbone in Spill

New York-based rider John Velazquez, who last weekend won Belmont Park’s marquee race for the second time when he guided Union Rags to victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes, will miss an unspecified amount of time after breaking his right collarbone in a spill Saturday night at Churchill Downs during the running of the ninth race.

 

Velazquez’s wife Leona was en route to Louisville Sunday afternoon and confirmed that John remained hospitalized at Norton Audobon Hospital in Louisville, Ky. where he was awaiting further evaluation from doctors to determine a course of treatment for the injury.

Good call, buckpasser. I remember when he broke it the first time. He was the No. 1 rider for Pletcher, and was replaced by Garrett Gomez, when he had his accident. Seems Garrett's success hastily sped up his recovery process. Wonder who'll be the replacement this time?
According to the NY Post JV will need surgery to put a plate in because it is in the same place where he broke his collarbone in 2006 and the plate is needed to stabilize the area. He is supposedly at home resting.
many new borns break it during birth. All one has to do is tape it and a few weeks later it is as good as new
I broke my collarbone once, was back riding in six weeks, maybe this helps Matz make his decisions on where UR will race next. Hopefully it wasn't too severe of a break, and heals fast. Good Luck to ya Johnny V
I'm just heart broken for Johnny V and Union Rags. Johnny V is one of the best and so many horse win because of him and just when I think UR might have some luck and momentum going for him. This happen....I wish Johnny a speedy recovery. My prayers are with you.
Agree completely Buckpasser, Rags and a good number of other horses that he does so well by, not to mention so many fans. Hope he mends well.
There are times I thinking Rags didn't have bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all. He wins the Belmont and looks like he is coming into his own and this happens
