Veteran Patrick Valenzuela was named Saturday morning to replace Joel
Rosario on Goldencents in Sunday’s $250,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes.
“We’re really excited,” trainer Doug O’Neill said. “I think he’s a
brilliant rider, Goldencents is a brilliant horse and I think they’ll
make a great team.”
Goldencents, winner of the Santa Anita Derby last April, and the Sham
Stakes and Delta Downs Jackpot before that, has been ridden by Kevin
Krigger in all nine of his previous starts while amassing earnings of
$1,340,000. The son of Into Mischief, who will be the only 3-year-old in
the 7-furlong O’Brien, was second, beaten a head by Points Offthebench,
in the Grade I Bing Crosby on July 28.
Valenzuela, 50, returned from temporary retirement and recovery from
knee surgery on August 3. He ranks ninth on Del Mar’s all-time list for
stakes victories with 68. The only Pat O’Brien triumph on the list was
aboard Bold Brawley in 1986.
